Smashing Pumpkins Inducted Into Hollywood Rockwalk

The Smashing Pumpkins were enshrined in the Hollywood Rock Walk on April 23, and on hand to be presented into the walk and into the mud was Billy Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin. The band was arguably the biggest band of the 1990's spawning such hits as "Disarm," "Cherub Rock," "1979," "Bullet With Butterfly Wings," "Zero," and others.

After breaking up in 2000, the band reformed with a full page ad from Billy Corgan looking to complete the group. The band released Zeitgeist last year and toured the world once again, with the crowning performance at Live Earth. Corgan and Chamberlin talked about the honor.

[Chamberlin] "Yeah. It's fantastic." [Corgan] "I have to say I'm touched and kind of shocked. It's so rare that something good happens to us."

Corgan said the RockWalk means a lot to them as opposed to some of the awards in their genre, which he said sometimes go to "lame" bands.

"Coming from Alternative world you generally look at award suspiciously because for years those types of things went to the lame people. But looking out there at the people who have been inducted, it's a lot of people we grew up listening to, and people we really respect. Even if the cool art world doesn't recognize them, we still think they're important. We feel we're amongst the right group of people out there."

Smashing Pumpkins join their rightful place next to The Cure, Ronnie James Dio, Slash, Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, and others.

I'll admit that Corgan is an underrated guitar player and Chamberlin is a good drummer but best of all time? Not even close. Maybe one of the best in the 90's but he has nothing on Peart, Bonham or Moon.

To be fair why should they? Sure James can play and he's done well with his solo efforts outside of SP but to say he's a big part isn't much when Billy wrote most of what James played. Same for D'arcy, anyone could've filled their shoes and history shows that's true since SP's current line up is doing all right. If that's the case why not praise the new members just as much since they're doing the same thing as James and D'arcy, it's just a matter of them being there first.

guitgrinder, ever think that Corgan doesn't really care for anything sales-wise except spreading some good music nowadays? They deserve to be with those bands that clearly inspired them as they've lived up to their idols' levels. Also Corgan may have been acting ironic as he does.

I prefer Chamberlin to Bonham and Moon, and consider him an equal with Pert. I think Jimmy has the best drum tone around. Also, Machina had electronic drum sets, not just drum machines. Listen to the Jimmy Chamberlin Complex.

With the James and Darcy thing. OK Darcy probably wasn't that important musically but James was a pretty big influence on their sound when he was around.

They were also forced to use drum machines for Adore, when Chamberlin was in rehab. Nonetheless, I'd place him among the best rock drummers. Not only can he play, but he knows how to actually play for the song, unlike a lot of show off prog drummers (Carl Palmer anyone?). Plus he's got the greatest intensity live.

Both Corrigan, and Chamberlin are under rated. Jimmy is an extremely good drummer. Everyone is stuck on the classics, but in 20 years SP will be classic rock. Rush will be considered "oldies"!

I don't think they used drum machines on that album at all, and if they did it was minimal.

Adore was the album recorded with drum machines because Chamberlain got kicked out after their keys player died of an overdose on tour with Chamberlainwith him despite Corgans strict no drugs on tour policy.

The band took him back by Machina after he got clean.
