Nine Inch Nails Hammers Scalpers With New Policy

In a move meant to get fans into premium seats and bypass ticket brokers and scalpers, industrial-rock band Nine Inch Nails has reserved tickets to each of its upcoming summer tour dates for registered users of its Web site, NIN.com.

The limited allotment of tickets will be made available through online pre-sales only to users registered under their legal names on NIN.com. Tickets acquired through these pre-sales will be marked with the purchaser's name and will have to be picked up at the appropriate venue on the date of the event. A valid government-issued ID matching the name printed on the ticket will be required for entrance.

The pre-sales will begin about 72 hours before general online ticket sales for each event.

Nine Inch Nails' summer tour kicks off July 25 at the Pemberton Festival in Pemberton, British Columbia, and continues through September 6.

Nine Inch Nails' new fan ticketing procedure follows similar strategies from bands like Pearl Jam and Maroon 5, who have also required fans who purchase tickets from their Web sites to pick up tickets with valid I.D. at the concert only.

Thanks for the info to Yahoo! News.

I've been wanting to see NIN since the day my friend showed me a clip of one of their live shows. They've been his favourite band for a looooong time, and we were planning on going the day they came. But they're playing at a 3-day 300 dollar festival with a bunch of indie bands I've never heard of . Sure it'd be great for someone who liked that music, but this is coming from a death/black metal head...

I love Trent's attitude towards everything to do with music. He knows what it means to be a fan and I think some people forget that.

The irony of this is when Led Zeppelin did something similar, everyone bashed them. I think it's cool he is having some reserved for users of his site, and he has gone out of his way for his fans. However, marking it with their name is a load of bullcrap. If people want to scalp, scalp. Or if people want to just sell their ticket, let them.

Then what happens when someone who bought tickets cannot go after buying them? They can't sell them to regain their money, nor can they give them away, I think that's a pretty big downfall.

It is convenient to have to collect the personal information of EVERY person that preorders a ticket, print a specific ticket for every single one of those individuals with each person's information on it, and then let them into the venue first and immediately after ensuring their identity? Reconsider that statement...

it mainly just stops ppl from buying tickets then selling them for more when the gig is sold out. And it lets registered members get pre-sale tickets which loadso f bands do anyway...

well you can STILL buy them from traditional sources. You've been given options so choose one and stop bitching for no sensible reason.

i couldnt get tickets to ozzfest because of those damned scalpers selling ordering 20 pairs of tickets and then selling them on ebay. scalpers remove opertunitys from good people

That's really going to make entering the venue a lot slower. It also kind of eliminates fans who have a number of friends that want to see a show but aren't members of the website. Said friend and another get premium tickets, 5 other good friends don't, they're all split up now or maybe don't even get tickets cuz they have to buy from a ticket broker and it won't be accepted.

that would be a valid point, except that you can sign up on the website for free so anybody can do it. I think this is a really cool thing for Trent to do, even it if it isn't the first time, it shows he understands what fans go through when they get ripped off my ticket companies and scalpers. can't wait for the Aug 2nd Minneapolis show since they aren't coming to Iowa.

yeah like this is good, but it's pretty bad if you can't make a show; it's your right to sell your ticket...
Imagine it was sold out, and you couldn't go due to a bereavement - why shouldn't you be able to sell/give your ticket to someone who generally wants to go...
?
I get the point behind it; at glastenbury in the UK your picture is printed on the tickets; and I am all for it, but I cannot help but feel that when you've bought something you should be able to sell it if you want...people will always exploit a system (i.e. ticket scalpers) but that is a sad fact of life.

Foo Fighters did this 2 years ago when they played at the Sydney opera House and the funny thing was that when they were asked in an interview about it, they had no idea.

What if you're registered to the site, but are under age (I don't have an ID) and you don't have a school ID or something... do you just buy the tickets at the door or at a website like ticketmaster?
