Progressive Metal band Queensr˙che released their first single for their latest album 'Take Cover' on iTunes today. The song's name? Why, none other than Pink Floyd's classic song "Welcome To The Machine".
The new album will be full of cover songs that range from Black Sabbath, The O'Jays, to Broadway musicals. The album will be available in stores on November 13th.
Take Cover contains Queensr˙che's distinctive arrangement of Pink Floyd's "Welcome To The Machine," an acoustic version of Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth," and a highly charged live version of U2's "Bullet The Blue Sky." "We'll never top the originals; they're classics for a reason," Geoff Tate (lead singer) says.
"We were more focused on finding different approaches that took the songs in unexpected directions."

Welcome To The Machine is an awesome song... and Queenr˙che have always totally rocked... however, they completely mutilated and ruined this song when I saw them play it live during their Irvine, California USA concert with Heaven and Hell (Black Sabbath) and Alice Cooper on October 6th... and it sucked that they covered this tune so badly live because the rest of their set was flawless... I haven't yet heard this cover CD but, if hearing it live is any indication, I'll pass on this one, I'm sorry to say...POSTED: 10/17/2007 - 10:14 am / quote |

: ive never really liied queensryche, but i would like to hear this. i just hope they dont mutilate it like korn did to "another brick in the wall"
and to mfergel^ i disagree. think about it. if youve been recording ten, twenty, 30 years, dont you think youd want to record the songs that you love and inspired you to play music? now im not saying that cover albums are always good (hackdreamlandhack) but most are pretty cool.POSTED: 10/17/2007 - 02:09 pm / quote |

: i saw queensryche in hamilton with black sabbath and alice cooper, and not only did they do justice to "welcome to the machine" they DESTROYED IT!!! each individual member (minus bass and drums) took a solo, with tate using a sax. it was one of the best covers i had ever heard. so in other words, they made it better.POSTED: 10/17/2007 - 02:55 pm / quote |

: Oddly enough, I'm not a big fan of much of their stuff before Empire. I'm glad that they're going to change the original songs around some, but hopefully it won't turn out to be like A Perfect Circle's "eMOTIVe" which attempted the same thing.POSTED: 10/17/2007 - 04:55 pm / quote |

: a cover can turn out either good or bad. For example, i really like GNR's spaghetti incident. they did a good job. however ozzy's version of sympathy for the devil was so bad that it made me like the stones even more. dont judge before you heard the album. queensryche rulesPOSTED: 10/17/2007 - 05:24 pm / quote |

: Hmmm, I'm surprised nobody's mentioned that OTHER prog rock-band who covered the Floyd on several occasions, including a full rendition of "Dark Side" which I was lucky enough to see live. It was one hell of a performance, which didn't surprise anybody because Dream Theater (woops) can nail almost anything, but then again...
...it was also like seeing a carbon copy of an album which I had heard so many times already, and I was glad that they did an encore with just DT songs: playing cover songs is always fun, but it's a lot cooler to hear a band that has a different take on someone else's material by adding something new, making it their own.
I haven't heard Queensr˙che's song yet, but I hope they did a nice job. Welcome To The Machine is a fantastic trackPOSTED: 10/17/2007 - 05:48 pm / quote |

I wouldn't say "demise", I'd say "contractual obligation". A whole bunch of well-known and respected artists have done covers albums in the past, such as John Lennon, Robert Plant, Aerosmith and Van Halen (ok, technically it wasn't ALL covers, but still...) Usually they would have some sort of contract saying they had to release a certain number of albums, and since they were either too lazy or creatively spent to write more original music they ended up recording other people's songs. Usually, these albums got some recognition just because it was rock act X that recorded the songs, and then faded into the bargain bins.
However, that doesn't mean their careers are spent. Bob Dylan did a covers album in 1970, but some of his best work since the 60's (as in Blood on the Tracks) was yet to come. Also, Eric Clapton did a pretty interesting covers album called Me and Mr. Johnson, which was him doing new versions of Robert Johnson songs (Mr. Johnson wrote the song Cream reworked as "Crossroads"). It worked pretty well considering Eric didn't do any new stuff.POSTED: 10/17/2007 - 10:31 pm / quote |

Yeah, Shadows Fall did an excellent job at covering that song. I'm a huge pink floyd fan, but when it comes to Welcome to the Machine, I actually prefer the Shadows Fall version. POSTED: 10/18/2007 - 02:40 am / quote |
