Nine Inch Nails Release New Album For Free

artist: nine inch nails date: 05/05/2008 category: upcoming releases
Nine Inch Nails Release New Album For Free

Nine Inch Nails have released an unexpected new studio album 'The Slip' for free through their website.

In a statement available at nin.com, band leader Trent Reznor states: "As a thank you to our fans for your continued support, we are giving away the new nine inch nails album one hundred percent free, exclusively via nin.com."

The music is available in a variety of formats including high-quality MP3, FLAC or M4A lossless at CD quality and even higher-than-CD quality 24bit/96khz wave files.

The download includes a PDF with artwork and credits. The album will be available on CD and vinyl in July.

Once known not only for bringing industrial rock to the mainstream, but the length of time between releases, Reznor has been increasingly prolific in recent years. It took him 16 years to release his first four full-length albums under the Nine Inch Nails moniker, but this record means he has released three new records in the last year, plus one remix album.

The new album contains the following tracks:

01. 999,999
02. 1,000,000
03. letting you
04. discipline
05. echoplex
06. head down
07. lights in the sky
08. corona radiata
09. the four of us are dying
10. demon seed

Credits for the info to TV3.co.nz.

Wicked, more bands should be doing this.

This is the way the music industry should go! Especially the big bands who make a ton. Get the money from shows instead.

The difference between Radiohead and NIN is that Radiohead did only do it as a publicity stunt (to get a reaction from their fanbase and see what their music is really worth to them), while Trent did it because of his complete dissatisfaction of the music business, and in defiance of what his record company would expect of him. So while both bands did something similar, they had different (and equally valid) reasons for it.

It's pretty much common knowledge that Trent is pissed right off with the music industry, especially after what he said had happened with the "Capital G" single being overpriced.

I'm not really a fan of NIN, but what he's doing is great. I use to critisize Trent for only releasing an album like once every 5 years but I can't do that anymore. In the past year or so he has made up for all those long waits. He just gained alot of respect from me. And to the guy who said that "he sits at a computer and programs the whole thing, i mean anyone here could do it with the tiniest bit musical knowledge", yeah he probably does that, but so many albums these days are made like that, but hardly no one else releases it for free. We live in a digital world, so many musicians are using computers now.

I'm w/you the record companies make most thier money of the CD sales and the artists get thier money from touring if you do your own CD for free, give it away, then tour you'll make a lot more money that way.

Actually, you need to have a license to distribute the music, so yes, it's illegal to pirate a free album.

However, most people who give albums away won't care if you pirate them. Especially not Trent Reznor.

dont forget trent has been round enough to afford to do this. To the person who talked about the computer stuff, Ok, here is where you show your lack of musical knowledge, i play the guitar, piano, banjo, bass, drums, i sing and can play a little trumpet. I also create this sort of 'Computer music' that you refer to, and im sorry but not anyone can do it. Its an art amongst itself, some people say that playing bass is easier to play than guitar (im not saying it is, just an example dont flame yet!) in the same vein some people say that eruption by van halen is easy, some say its not but just because your perception of difficulty is one thing doesnt mean it actually is. Also why does it matter how technically difficult something? After all isnt it what it sounds like the only thing that matters?

P.S this album is awesome! Trent Reznor does it again, master piece!

Couple things. First, Trent/NIN have released 5 albums and 1 remix album this year. Ghosts 1-4, The Slip and Year Zero Remixed.
Second, the whole free music thing, people keep saying it just started with Radiohead. Totally not true. Punk bands and even local bands have been doing that for years. There was also another major artist who did it in 2006. It was Neil Young or Bruce Springsteen or another one of those sort of "Americana" artists.

you've obviously never programmed a song. especially without a midi keyboard. i have. i'd often spend around 15 hours just doing the drums. its actually easier to sit down with bass and guitars and record than it is to paste each note in one at a time.

+10000. So true. I find programming a ton more difficult than recording with standard instruments, and even so - He spent his time on it, AND It's free, so why bother the discussion?

By the way, this guy is awesome. I'm not a huge NIN fan (I'm slowly getting into them) but I love Trent's direction.

Great to see that the man is pulling a Radiohead and deciding not to do this anymore. I also love how he's not promoting the album or even acknowledging its existance until a few hours before hand.

It's not illegal lol the music is DRM free; it's just that they have to at least attempt to regulate the download servers so they email you a link to a download of the CD that will only work for an hour, and that's all your email is used for

lol, i doubt you even listened to it. And no, he didn't sit on a laptop and make it himself, there's actual drums and guitars and bass on this record in addition to all the electronic stuff. So it wasn't just on "his" time.

You're blatantly misinformed sir. Trent posted some free Year Zero tracks on his site before it came out. Later in 2007, he worked with rapper Saul Williams to publicize his new album, which met critical acclaim in the hip-hop world. Saul's work was only released a few weeks post-IN_RAINBOWS.

though i haven't listened to it yet (still downloading), i suppose it's hard to be disappointed about a free album. this is the way art should be, direct from the artist, free of charge for the enjoyment of all those who care to enjoy it. i hope that eventually the record companies get the idea. it works (well, for the big names, anyway).

I think a lot of people that keep insulting it don't understand the music. Playing Industrial/electronic music is not about being a precision perfect metal band. In fact it's something quite different. The fanbase seems to have a similar agreement on musical taste, so if it doesn't appeal to you, don't download it. Also, I didn't give Radiohead a dime for that crap. I like Radiohead, but seriously In Rainbows was not that great. I'm more about the Pablo Honey and Hail to the Thief vibe of their work.
