Metallica Preview New Album

UK's Rock Sound and Metal Hammer magazines have posted separate reports on the listening session for the new Metallica album, which took place earlier yesterday (Wednesday, June 4) in London.

Rock Sound writes: "On first impressions and just one listen, Rock Sound can confirm that the songs we've heard sound very much like classic Metallica in vibe, harking back to the days of 'Master Of Puppets', '…And Justice For All' (but with bass) and the [self-titled 'black'] album — without sounding dated or tired.

"Of the six tracks Rock Sound heard this afternoon, only one had a working title — 'Flamingo'. With a slow intro, the song was reminiscent of 'Battery' in vibe, with two guitar solos and an undercurrent of melody and groove.

"The first single is an epic power rocker in the vein of 'The Unforgiven', 'Nothing Else Matters' and 'Sanitarium', with a mid-tempo, head-banging section and some THIN LIZZY-esque twin guitar riffage.

"Another song features the lyrics, 'Into abyss, you don't exist, you can't resist the Judas kiss'; another features an almost Rage Against The Machine-esque drum 'n' bass undercurrent and lyrics about 'suicide' and 'cyanide'; while the final song we heard, dubbed 'The Song', clocks in at under five minutes and is a galloping thrash attack with quirks, and a sniff of Testament about it!

"We suspect other song titles could include 'Die Hard', 'Show Your Scars', and 'My Apocalypse' — but we cannot be held responsible if none of these titles or lyrics are accurate!

"Thankfully — there are plenty of Kirk Hammett traditional guitar solos and a decent drum sound. Hetfield's voice sounds in fine form too. All of the songs have many different parts to them, giving the impression that the quartet is revisiting the epic vibe of the band's 'classic' period."

Metal Hammer reports: "What do the songs sound like? Track one, which is only known by the cryptic working title 'Flamingo', opens up on thunderous rolling drums as lead guitar meets them head on, a flaring up in stop-start motion before it pulls itself together in rushes forward in classic thrash style, all crunching 'Fight Fire With Fire' riffs and drilling beats. It takes at least two minutes for James Hetfield's vocals to come in, and while they sound furious, this isn't the grittiest he's ever sounded, more open in tone, but while there's still a memorable vocal line for the 'chorus,' and there is so much going on in the song, and so many ideas thrown in and discarded for the next one that it's hard on first listen to pick out one riff that you're going to remember it by. But with galloping riffs and the return of guitar breaks rising up from out of the grooves you can hear the true METALLICA spirit, even though its as if reflected in mirrored mosaic.

"Track two is at heart an anthemic ballad that recalls 'Fight Fire With Fire' and 'Nothing Else Matters', with a chiming guitar intro, airy vocals and some slightly convoluted, progressive-style bridges that mutate into urgent riffing, more galloping riffs and guitar solos. Again, the song has a number of different sections, but it still sounds massive.

"Track three kicks off on a stop-start riff flecked with Eastern touches, as other bustling guitar lines play off each other and Hetfield's vocals retain the power of old, like some monolithic prophet overlooking events as mid-paced, chugging riffs come in, sounding like an army on the march, methodically shooting anyone in their path.

"Track four is reminiscent of 'Master Of Puppets' with more than a touch of heads-down SLAYER pacing thrown in. After an artillery-lobbing drum-led intro, it quickly sets off on marching, thrash mode, Hetfield's spat vocals taking melodic digressions, as he roars 'Bow down, surrender unto me.' The song's groove carries you along as it opens up into guitar atomospherics that bring Led Zep to mind. It isn't quite the kind of irresistible monster they've created before, but Metallica still prove they can still sound lean and epic at the same time, and when the track drops out into the grove mid-way though, you can imagine the chants coming from the crowds live.

"Track five has another strong opening, with an uncharacteristic bouncing groove not a million miles away from Rage Against The Machine making appearances throughout setting off sharp riffs that come up against an irregular barrage of percussion that sets it off briefly on a more melodic path and builds up once again into a thrilling riff-fest mayhem.

"Track six is the 'song', considerably shorter than the others, but full of clinically sharp riffing, more Slayer-esque parts and galloping grooves, all hustle and bustle with a tinge of Eastern melody thrown in once more.

"Initial impressions is that this is an album that's going to get our blood chugging, but whether it's all we hoped for is going to take more plays to answer. Ultimately we're hugely relieved and pretty damn thrilled, and we can't fucking wait to hear the rest."

Thanks for the report to Blabbermouth.net.

I understand St. Anger, but what was wrong with Load and Reload? Or where you refering to Garage Inc and S&M?

Anyways, so far this wounds great, I'm excited and can't wait for the new album. With St. Anger being the nearest thing in memory in regards to new Metallica, that will probablly make this sound even more awesome cause anything will be better then that album.

Wow. I think that in retrospect, as much as a disappointment that St. Anger was, it has has totally re-focused Metallica into the beast of a band that they used to be which has led up to this upcoming album. Of course, these are all opinions from a biased group, however, can it really be worse than St. Anger?

Lol. It seems like My Apocalypse is a pretty popular name for songs. I can think of two bands that have a song called that, Arch Enemy and Escape The Fate, and I know there's way more.

Anyway, I am quite excited for this album.

I don't understand why, just because they've (and along with other various 'metal' magazines) said that it's going to be really good and say that it's just like old metallica, people beleive them.
Bands can say what they like about their new album but until i hear this i won't judge.
What i WILL prejudge on is that they've completely sold out and released terrrible albums for a long time.
So they say it will change. I know everyone thinks that Metallica are gods (which they aren't) but that doesn't mean they won't lie in order to make more sales.

just my opinion.

To be honest--with the exception of MAYBE two songs from Load and Reload, I can't stand those albums. Load, Reload, and St. Anger are NOT what us elitist fans think Metallica should be. Hell, I even dislike the Black Album to an extent because that is when they moved from thrash to a more of hard rock--which is not what I want my Metallica to be

Unsung heroes in the production of this new album: Trivium, BMFV, A7X etc. In plenty of interviews, Metallica has stated that listening to those bands has really influenced them to sort of go back to the old ways (and show who the real kings are?). So yay for Metallica being influenced by bands that were influenced by old Metallica.

Any Album that needs to be build up this much or needs this much publicity usually sucks ass. I have a feeling this album is gonna be bad, mainly because Metallica just doesn't have in them anymore. Personally I thought St. Anger was alright and 5-6 years later their follow up will get progressively worse. Load was good , Reload Was Alright. But I could be wrong and this could be the album that makes people remember why Metallica is so great. I'm hoping it will be a great album but hope only goes so far my instincts say it's gonna suck.

However I do think they could get quite close in the riff department, but Hetfield's voice will take the music fully out of that era.

Because Metallica changed their sound so much and to the hardcore fans, it was for the worse. Take St. Anger--the fact that they wanted to remove to solos to appeal to a wider audience is what I believe to "sell out." It was a big middle finger to the old school fans who love their Metallica fast, heavy, and full of amazing solos. If you still don't comprehend--listen to ...And Justice for All, then the Black Album, then Load and you can hear how much their music changed from thrash to hard rock

Metallica is my favorite band ever to make music. I really dont think Load, ReLoad , and St. Anger were that bad. Sure they might not have the solos and such which always amazed me...but theyve still got that heaviness that i love about them without being some screaming band that no one can understand. Im a bigger fan of riffs myself and i dont think its so bad that they changed things up a little. different doesnt exactly mean bad. but dont get me wrong, 80's Metallica is what i like best and it may have gone slightly downhill from there but its not as bad as everyone says and i still love Metallica

THAT is why St. Anger failed...

As for the new album, I'm not really expecting much... As someone before me said on this thread, too much hype means it's either mind-boggling, or it'll blow ass. I think that their sound has changed so much that them trying to go back to their old ways will almost be like forcing it.

enough about kirk hammett using wah pedals, metal/hard rock guitarists have used it for at least 15 years before hammett used it on a mettalica record, and they've used it a lot better than he has. and last time i checked, all his great solo's, for "one" to "master" have no wah at all.

and next, i hope they release an album soon. they have 8 records of original material in 25 years, while megadeth has been around for 22 years, broke for 3 years, mustaine went to rehab, and they have 10 albums out, without any "st.anger/reload" disasters.

still, lookin forward to this albunm if the reviews are half-way true.

I wouldn't consider the solos on One and MOP his best by any means really, not bad but not his best.

Load and ReLoad were not great but they both had some ok / good songs on them. They just aren't the same as the earlier stuff though and people bitch about them. My fav song by them would have to be four horsemen but every live version i have ever heard of it they leave off the first solo which sux. Still best studio song imo.

Yea that has got to be the worst part of St. Anger, The drums totally blow. Few of the songs I could listen to if it wasn't for the snare.

It sounds to me that this is gonna be an epic album, of what I read, it's also gonna be the best album in 15 years!

When I say epic, I mean epic like Master Of Puppets and Ride The Lightning.

Now, we have to wait 3 months till it's out, but this wait is worth it, I have a feeling about it. About what's been written here on ultimate-guitar since last year (or earlier?) it has sounded very very promising.

Easy said: It's gonna kick ass!

Overshadow? Goddammit separate the bands for once cause they shouldn't ever be associated like that. The only people who think it's sad are the ones comparing commercial success anyway and thats no way to measure the success of a kickass band.

Being probably one of the older Metallicats here, I have to pipe in- Yeah, Load, ReLoad, and St. Anger were a definite change from the early stuff, it was just a progression in what they wanted to do musically.

I was baptized by Kill Em All, saw the light on Ride the Lightning, got my ass kicked by Master of Puppets, lived through Justice, settled down for the black, liked Load, accepted ReLoad, and was angered by St. Anger, but through it all, they made good music.

They're aren't more than a couple years older than me, and I am ready for some of that old time Metallica.... and I bet they are too. It's going to be good, really good.
