Metallica 'Death Magnetic' Box Set

artist: metallica date: 07/04/2008 category: upcoming releases
Metallica 'Death Magnetic' Box Set

According to the Norwegian music retailer Platekompaniet, Metallica will release a limited-edition two-CD, one-DVD, deluxe "Death Magnetic" box set in September. The box set will be packaged as a coffin box and will also include an exclusive t-shirt, flag and USB memory stick.

The details of the deluxe box set are as follows:

  • 1 "Death Magnetic" CD (exclusive digipack version)
  • 1 CD with demos of songs from "Death Magnetic" (10 songs)
  • 1 "Making of 'Death Magnetic'" DVD featuring never-before-seen material
  • 1 exclusive "Death Magnetic" t-shirt (only available with the box set)
  • 1 "Death Magnetic" flag
  • A set of "Death Magnetic" guitar picks
  • 1 fold-out, coffin box, poster with pictures of the band members
  • 1 USB memory stick with Metallica logo (enables digital download of "Death Magnetic" album)

A Finnish retailer called Record Shop X has listed Wednesday, September 17 as the release date for Metallica's ninth studio album, "Death Magnetic". Although an official release date has yet to be announced by the band or its label, the Finnish date would indicate that the album would arrive in the U.S. on Tuesday, September 16, with most of continental Europe getting the CD one day earlier on September 15. Some countries, including Germany, Austria and Switzerland, would see the record issued on Friday, September 12.

Tuesdays are when almost all CDs are issued in the U.S.

The members of Metallica have been saying in interviews that the album will arrive in September.

"Death Magnetic" was produced by Metallica and Rick Rubin, and marks the recording debut of bassist Robert Trujillo, who joined the lineup in 2003 shortly after the last Metallica album, "St. Anger", was completed.

Metallica will hit some European festivals starting in mid-July. The band's next U.S. date is the one-day Ozzfest on August 9 in Dallas, with a full North American tour slated to begin in October.

A Metallica cover of Iron Maiden's "Remember Tomorrow" will appear on a compilation of Maiden covers being given away by England's Kerrang! magazine with its July 16 issue. Other artists contributing Maiden covers to the collection include Machine Head, Avenged Sevenfold, Coheed And Cambria and Dream Theater.

Thanks for the info to Metallica XXX, Blabbermouth.net.

It's not. It's called marketing. The more things you can slap a Metallica ninja star on, the better.

(Side note) I wonder if the pick thickness is heavy, medium or what. I'm hoping heavy, though in cases such as this, they give medium picks.

That's what I was thinking. If you paid the money to get the box set, why would you need to have a USB digital download...? doesn't make sense if you already have the CD to download...

The USB stick isn't that bad of an idea. Definitely should provide better quality sound should you copy the album from the stick. Better quality than ripping the CD.

Unless the distributor is going to be cheap and just rip the CD and put it on the thumb drive then sell it. It's probably 320kbps bitrate if it's digital. Cd's are usually 128 or 256kb bitrate. Eh I don't remember, it's been awhile since I've bought an actual CD. .

lolol CDs will always sound better than digital unless youre listening to FLAC, which is a lossless format. most digital downloads are mp3s at 128-256 kbps but if you rip from a CD you can set the quality to 320 kbps.

this box set sounds cool but the flash drive album seems unnecessary and also its a terrible idea. CDs are way better in just about every aspect imaginable

Way off. CD quality is way better. Files on cd's are wav files. Which are about 10x bigger than 192kb/s mp3's.

You may be confused with all the talk of late about new music sounding crappy, but that has to do with the way it's mastered. You don't hear as many people complaining about older albums on cd, even though it's not as good as vinyl.

So many people don't seem to see the point of this.
The memory stick, is a memory stick with a Metallica logo on, and i guess the Metallica guys thought it would be cool if you could download the album with it.

The main feature of it isn't the album download.

This sells the album with lots of extra features, for fans who really love Metallica, like myself.
I love wathching footage of them, so i'm buying this.
Plus, Metallica need to make money somehow, so here's their answer....merchandise.

If you're not really a big fan you shouldn't buy this, buy the standard CD.
But actually buy it, rather than just waiting for someone to put it on some freebie download site.

Support Metallica, this album wont be crap, none of their albums have been, they've just been different sub-genres of metal. Load, Reload and St. Anger show Metallica's versatility. I loved them all.

Plus, i'm hoping Metallica release this and all the other remaining albums on vinyl, already got Kill 'Em All, Ride The Lightning and Master Of Puppets on deluxe vinyl. So Awesome.

1 USB memory stick with Metallica logo (enables digital download of "Death Magnetic" album)

    Why is this even useful?

I bet it'll be cos Metallica will put all sorts of anti-piracy shit on their discs, to stop piracy, cos they hate that and shit.

digital downloads from iTunes and other places are of higher quality than if they were ripped off of a cd, when you rip cd onto the computer they lose a bit of their original sound quality, and a considerable amount of mid to high frequencies, but when it comes to this, lol, i can't even hear this, so yes, useless gimmick

anyways, does anyone know if the box set will be available in retail stores ie future shop, the source etc? or will the box set only be available through online ordering?
