Iron Maiden To Offer 'Best Of' For Free

Iron Maiden are to release their new 80s best of, 'Somewhere Back In Time', as a free high-quality download from their website.

However, the 320 kbps WMA file can only be played three times before it expires, when listeners will be able to purchase the album as a DRM-free download.

'Somewhere Back In Time' compiles moments from the band's seven albums and one live album released in the 80s, and includes songs such as 'The Number Of The Beast' and 'Run To The Hills'.

The album is released on May 12, and will be available to download from Ironmaiden.com.

The tracklisting is as follows:

I think that is a great idea, not to the guy who posted before me but to the band and their management. This gives people a free taste of what they might or might not want- someone like me who only has one iron maiden album- and it gives it to them in full as opposed to the crappy amazon sound clips. Great marketing strategy, it's much easier to sell someone something they know they like as opposed to something they don't even know. And that is perfect for a best of album, because when you don't know a band what do you do? you check out the best of, and now their best of is easier to access.

Sorry for rambling, i just thought it was a great idea, like a bunch of the recent online releases and things.

This is a very smart move. Give any one interested in maiden a chance to preview their music and see if they like it. I kinda like the idea of only being able to listen to a song three times and then it gets deleted. I don't think it will reduce illegal downloading but it will shut up all those hypocrites that say they only download music to preview it.

If you wanna hear a good band then listen to the iron maiden band from the 1960's. I believe they were born from the same town as the popular maiden of today. But this older iron maiden band is just some ogood old hard rock. I have their "maiden voyage" album and it's fantastic.

Well the maiden voyage album has a few cheesy songs but songs like falling were amazing. You'll only like the album if you are into early hard rock stuff. It's nothing like the popular iron maiden. But when it comes to the popular maiden, I like the stuff with Paul Dianno the best.

I personally find Maiden to be one of the most repetative metal bands I know of (mind you, I used to be a fan and have all their albums), Steve really needs to learn a new chord progression. And it's painfully underlined when compared to Bruce's eminent solo records (Accident and Wedding in particular), that sound like absolutely nothing else in metal and that shit on everything Maiden ever did basically...

But there's no denying that they are awesome guys and that they treat their fans like they really matter (which, of course, they do), and a lot of artists should learn from them. I have great respect for their devotion to their fans.

Iron Maiden isn't about hits :P Iron Maiden is a live band with awesome songs - and they don't need constant publicity to maintain their fan base, unlike metallica who are always on music channels.

I do like metallica though, but maiden is best. Black Sabbath with Dio comes in second - very very close to maiden. Dio rules.

I think the more important issue at hand is that this is indeed a very good idea. If more bands start doing this, it'll allow people to preview their music, as in full songs not just lame 30 second sound bits, but then also to actually pay for their music. Brilliant.

Most attractive solos to date? Hold on while I rofl my waffles. I listen to metallica for some decent riffage, not repetative blues scale solo's

Sorry, stop listening to the dave mustaine solo's off kill em all. Every Hammett solo is a slow, wah-wah saturated solo based on one scale, where as Iron maiden have speed, melody, great harmony solo's, and much more variety.

Also, what you said about Hetfield is a complete contradiction "James is a mediocre rythym player but he plays some great riffs." Am I completely misinformed or do good riffs=good rythym playing? James, (talking about Kill-AJAF) has some of the best rythym playing I have heard, its not death metal heavu or powermetal fast, just some really awesome metal. Have you heard AJAF? You should really listen to that before calling James a mediocre rythym player, then saying kirk is better than Murray/Smith/Gers.

Even if they are limited, I think it's great Iron Maiden does this, it shows they aren't in it all for the money, they probably know people illegally download the music anyways. (I have their real CDs however). But it's better than just buying and hoping for good songs if you're new to Maiden.

I don't see why Flight of Icarus was not on that CD.


Oh well, and to Shread and the person he quoted, Kirk Hammet is likewise overrated, but he is still good, his solos are very pretty you could say.
Mostly you hear those nice solos in their major hits, like Master of Puppets, One, And Justice for All, and Blackened, but if you know what I mean there.
Even though I'm sure James helped a bit with those solos.

Iron Maiden is just, unique, I don't know how to say it.
They are unique in the fact that they are the original, the people that sound just like them are the copycats.
Save Judas Priest and a few others, they really changed metal. I'm not much a metalhead myself, but I play alot of it.

Really... when did music start being entirely about technicality? I was assuming it had more to do with emotion as opposed to skill. I mean, a ten year old banging on pots and pans isn't charting material, obviously, but it is emotionally driven music where skill doesn't matter.

I've bought and paid for all 14 of Maiden's studio albums as well as a couple of live ones, and I honestly have to say that they were worth every single penny.

Murray, Smith, and Gers are all astounding, unique players. You can't compare any one of them to Kirk Hammett any more than you could compare them to each other. Just accept that they all make good music, stop being a bunch of little girls already.

Don't know why this post turned into a Kirk Hammet debate. All I can say is most of Hammet's solos are a lot easier to play than they sound and alot Maiden solos are alot harder to play then they sound.
I think this was a great idea to introduce the classic Maiden tunes to new fans.

Why did this turn into a Metallica vs Maiden contest? Ah well, i love both these bands (though personally i prefer Maiden but that's neither here nor there) i kind of think it's a bit stupid bringing out ANOTHER greatest hits, half of their best songs never appear on these CDs anyway, anyway, Definitely go see their Somewhere Back in Time Tour, it was almost worth it just to see the rarely performed Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Aces High, Maiden rock harder now than ever, it's just a shame i'm only 18 and never got to experience the original rise to power!!

Omfg Maiden and metallica are both great!Even though maiden is my all time favorite band.Maiden is soo much better than metallica live also.and of course then theres the person who thinks there "overated" any band with enough recognition and fanbase is "overrated" its just choice,if you like it good if not then fine. -_-

On the promo video for Aces High there's a bit of that famous churchill speech. They also played it as the intro on the Live after Death and Somewhere Back in Time tour before opening with Aces High.

i would assume the reason they're making it available for free is for NEW fans?!?!?! duh! we all have their songs, these songs are just to get new fans. and as most of you might know every new generation will have Maiden fans.
I'm gonna go see them play May 31st in Irvine, CA. i like Maiden the most for personal reasons out of any metal band, and they do stay true to their roots, unlike Metallica who has disappointed their fans. Everything Iron Maiden has put out is worth a listen to. Early Maiden with Paul Di'Anno is awesome, but nothing beats Bruce on vocals.

What the **** does it matter? They're both great bands, whether you like them or not. They are both monumental in rock history.

Music wasn't made to be fought over. Music is something entirely it's own, and the reason there are different bands is to express the musical views of the band members. If you have the same views and tastes, you like the band. If you don't, you don't.

That doesn't mean you need to start a fight over every time someone says they think a certain person is the best ever. That's their opinion, and you can't prove opinions wrong because they're based purely on taste.

People, just grow up and stop trying to be right, just listen and enjoy the music.

Guys just burn the files to a disc and then delete them. Then you have an Iron Maiden Greatest Hits CD you can play on and away from your computer.

This is a good idea I think. The record companies should offer a few more free sample packages for people to promote their bands and boost album sales a bit.
