Guitar Hero IV To Feature Non-Guitars?

IGN reports that the May issue of Conde Nast Portfolio magazine sees Activision CEO Bobby Kotick revealing a future direction that would put his company's Guitar Hero franchise on equal footing to last year's newcomer, Rock Band.

Upgrades include additional instruments (including vocals and, we hear separately, drums), as well as "local content" from "local bands."

This corresponds with information Joystiq website has received from a source close to the company, who says that multiple instruments – including a microphone and drumkit – will be a part of the next Guitar Hero game, likely to be called Guitar Hero IV despite its focus on multiple instruments (other potential names: Band Hero and Rockstar Hero).

Also, it is reported that Activision insiders are proud enough of their drum peripheral to say that it will be "superior" to Rock Band's.

Perhaps just as importantly, Activision's weakness in downloadable content could be resolved as early as the release of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith this June, when content is expected to be released regularly, perhaps "even weekly." Also contributing to the company's positive outlook on DLC is the pending merger with Vivendi, potentially giving it unparalleled access to that company's Universal Music Group, the largest family of record labels in the music industry.

Thanks for the report to Joystiq.com.

Now comes the ironic part I never played GH2 and decided to pick up GH3 and I sucked and everyone laughed me for sucking. I think this guitar hero thing just needs to die.

You're a waste of good oxygen.

Anyway, people need to stop trashing this game just because it "isn't real guitar". I agree with scourge441 on this one.

So yeah. Anyway, Rock Band is far too expensive for any video game, and I'm sure this one won't be any better from the looks of the potential peripheral. Although that just looks like a picture of a normal electric drum kit.

I second that greatly. Even more so, the drum setup pictured looks so elaborate that you might as well buy an electronic drum kit. Its funny b/c after playing Rock Band, it's pretty evident that playing the guitar is actually the least exciting aspect of that game. The other two instruments surprisingly enough actually require some skill. With the mic, for one thing you're actually singing (your own personal karaoke machine anyone?), and with the drums, if you're playing it on at least 'hard' difficulty, you can pretty much play actual drums (for all you drummers out there who will most likely give me flack for that statement, I don't mean you're gonna sound like Neil Peart, but it does teach basic rythmic patterns that are essential to drumming). Lastly, coming from somebody who plays Rock Band, Guitar Hero and actual instruments, for all the GH/RB haters out there, seriously lighten the hell up. Its just a game. And a fun game at that. If you suck at GH but are good at actual guitar, just be comfortable with that fact and move on. Beating GH on expert isn't exactly a rite of passage so don't get all butthurt if you're friends laugh at you for being bad at a VIDEO GAME. There are more important things to worry about.

Cue the Guitar Hero bashing from people who haven't ever played the game, haven't played it since the first one came out, or who are bad at it and are angry because people can be good at things. Or dislike the song list.

Anyway, here goes Activision trying to rip off Harmonix. After Guitar Hero III, their Band Hero or whatever has to be amazing to be worth it. With decent extra songs too.

uberphreak wrote:

Since you won't be playing it alone, why not get three friends to chip in. Do any of you Guitar Hero bashers remember friends? You know, people who maybe do homework or build muscle cars or something, and then can step up on medium difficulty and have fun playing a videogame with you?

I love playing guitar, but it's not for everyone. Guitar Hero, however, is possible for everyone. So lighten up, please.

These games have gotten good music into the ears of young people. If nothing else, they'll grow to appreciate what good music is, as opposed to the utter crap that is on the majority of radio stations.

For that alone, these games should be praised. But then, they show that music isn't made by a machine somewhere, but by a person holding an instrument. With any luck, this will inspire kids to get a guitar, bass, drums - maybe even a PA - and try the real thing for themselves.

Compared to American Idol, GH/RB are godsends.

I can play Vai and Dream Theater but you dont hear me bashing people who brag about being able to play guitar hero on expert? NO, because IT DOESN'T MATTER.

My suggestion is re-evaluate what you feel you need to worry about in life because getting worked up about a video game is nothing short of pathetic.

If they plan on using that drum kit as the actual drums for GH4 then god help us all.

We all know that with the exception of "Green Grass And High Tides", GH3 is much more difficult on the guitar (I'm talking playing both on Expert with any GH guitar, not the horrible Rock Band guitar) and I like it that way. I play Rock Band for the songs, which are better IMO, but way easier. All chords? No thanks, more hammer-ons and pull-offs please. GH4 needs to stay only guitar, it still sells better, is cheaper and while it may not be as fun as RB when you have 4 people playing it, is far superior by yourself.

Oh come on, the reason I like guitar hero better than rock band is because they have harder and better songs for guitar. If they add this stuff, then it's going to get easier and not as fun. And there's no way I an put two drum sets in my house.

IMO, I'm sick and tired of hearing about all this Guitar Hero and Rock Band bullcrap. It's just a video game!! Almost every person I know that plays, I said almost, i'm not everybody, in percentage, I would say about 75%, think they are the next great one to Rock'N'Roll and all of sudden become this great Rock'N'Roll History teacher. It produces a lot of posers, now that does not mean that I am saying everybody that plays Guitar Hero or Rock Band is a poser, I'm just saying people take it way to serious and think they are the greatest thing ever because they can beat Slash and Tom in a face-off, when they don't even know who they are and couldn't tell you a damn thing about music in the first place. We all remember Pokemon and Dance Dance Revoolution, right? They were a huge thing, but Pokemon is unheard of today and Dance Dance Revolution is becoming that way. It's all a trend and will eventually go away with time.

But i think that rock band takes it too far. Guitar Hero is fun, but it's only a game so why make a band out of it? So to people who's about to buy rockband: learn a real istrument, otherwise your balls will fall off.

Anyone freaking out about this and saying it's only for people who can't play real guitar are complete idiots who are completely overreacting to something that isn't worth reacting over. It is a GAME for Christ's sake, it's for people who want to take their music listening and enjoyment to a new level without taking the time to learn an entirely new instrument. Sure, you could call these people lazy, but if they have no desire to play an instrument, but only to interact with the music they love so much, there is nothing wrong with that.
It's also for kids and for fun.
Stop complaining about people 'wasting their time' on something 'stupid like a 5 fret guitar controller' and go play Halo, that sure will get you far, too.

Also, I play Guitar Hero frequently, and at parties and stuff like that with friends, and guess what, I'm also in a real band playing real music on my real guitar, it's not like all these people are complete posers or anything. Infact, this game is inspiring many people to take up the instrument. That will help the guitar economy, you want this.

POSTED: 04/23/2008 - 01:27 pm / quote |
Lick_Soloist :
I don't understand all of the complaining. Its a video game, its fun. Anyone who takes their instrument seriously prefers the real thing than a computer simulation and if guitar hero positivly promotes guitar(and bass)to a wider audience we may see an influx in the amount of people who want to take up the instrument! Also the games introduce entire new sub-genres in rock to many players allowing many to expand their playing beyond what you would normally play. Really the game should be taken with a pinch of salt and played amongst friends on those evenings when there is nothing to do.

I think this'll be great. Always wanted to play the drums but never had the kit to learn, and i wasn't too keen on rock band. Guitar Hero is just a game, it's for enjoyment. If you don't like it , don't have a go at other people for liking it.

The thing is, the way the world was going, turning away from guitar, forgetting one of the main instruments of alot of genres of music. Guitar Hero took this in mind, and used the fact that the gaming world was a very big place. They used it to bring people back into playing guitar, and away from the talentless rubbish that we hear on the radio today and into some better music. No i'm not saying only music with guitar in is good, i'm just saying most new music is a waste of listening time.

I have to say, Ive been a fan of Guitar hero since the first one. I thought rock the 80's was a joke, and #3 I havnt played yet. But I think #2 was the best of the series.
But, once again, like it has been said here thousands of times, Its just a game. I know a few people who play guitar and play the game as well, and they dont seem to get worse by playing it. Its just about fun, hanging out with some friends, and rocking to some good tunes. Its the people who brag about getting a 5 star 98% on some song that is annoying. Those people really have no other skills to brag about and dont have another hobby.

But as for Guitar Hero including new instruments, I really do think its a joke. Its called Guitar Hero.....not Rock band.

Now I'm just bitter whenever I see GH being played, because I decided not to spend the time to get good at it so it's not really fun for me to play (I get competitive w games, don't like sucking!).

Sure, you can play bass by yourself, but only on practice mode(not sure about Rock Band, I just know you can't play bass in the Career Mode, or whatever they call it).

All you need to play this game is good eyesight, and the ability to not lose complete control of your anger over something this stupid.

do not seem to realize that no one views this game as a viable alternative to playing a real instrument. I have yet to see a concert where the lead guitarist must hand his current plastic controller to a roadie, who promptly hands him a different one. I have yet to see music being played on stage out of a Dolby surround sound system. I have yet to see anyone perform "Cliffs of Dover" on a screen hooked up to an Xbox 360 at a high school talent show.

Don't. Be. Stupid.

I just get really annoyed as a (bass) guitarist by all the publicity this game gets. Especially because people don't make the 5 o'cock news for winning Mortal Kombat or THPS tournaments. Yet Guitar Hero somehow nets all the cool points.

Everybody is capable of playing an instrument. Rick Allen from Def Leppard plays drums with one arm! And don't even say that learning an instrument is too time consuming. 30 minutes each day, that's all it takes. Guitar Hero really is for people that are too lazy to play real guitar. The game is starting to get washed out anyways. Rockband is gonna take over. Unfortunately, that means more drummer posers. lol.

guitar players who play guitar hero are probably people without guitar skills, so in the video game they can pretend to be good. With a virtual crowd. And a virtual stage. And virtual talents. To those people I would like to say: go practice

either that or they just think it's fun??? i mean seriously, wtf guys, it's a da*n video game, so why b*tch about people playing it???? i play guitar, i think i'm pretty good, but you know what...I like games too every now and then, and it's fun to play with friends and family. so stop bashing people who play it. In my family I am the only one that actually plays the real instrument so I bought the games so we could all play together... and ultimately isn't that what video games are for?...

I personally think that both games are a great tool for developing dexterity (not necessarily accuracy)for those that are aspiring to play guitar (just try playing on expert and see if YOU can keep up)

on a side note: I think that calling someone a 'fag' for playing the game is absolutely ridiculous, and to be quite honest, people like that should be banned from this forum just for the language alone...

Guitar hero wasnt that bad at first, in fact I loved the first two for being able to play some songs that would take forever for me to learn. They really ****ed it up with guitar hero 3 though, and for that they dont deserve to make another one. The problem with the game is all the people who play it and are like oh yeah i can play cult of personality 97% on expert! Since when is hitting 5 buttons to a song more of an acheivement that actually being able to play the effin song!!!! Not to mention the game led to me hating Dragonforce because now everyone who dont know shit about music now loves them, which makes it terrible. I agree with the guy that said rock band is kind of similar to actually playing, execept for guitar, seeing your actually singing and the drums are kind of like a rhythm trainer. Not to mention they actually release DLC like they said unlike GH3. Watch them not release any DLC for the next one. Also watch it get called a pathetic excuse for a game and then everyone forgets about GH. Hopefully that will happen, because if it doesnt, then guitar hero will lead to the end of the music industry.
I mean myself im ok at guitar hero i can play most of the songs on expert but then when some dude sits there and beats me at it and brags like hes hot shit that just shows how much of a dumb **** that person is. If they spent as much time trying to learn a real instrument as they did playing that game then they could maybe do something amazing.

.. why the hell would GH add drums and vocals? First of all they just bought the GH franchise. (Well Activision) and now Harmonix or w/e made Rock Band. I guess GH finally count on that just playing guitar is very boring. Atleast with RB you could play bass whenever you want, drums and vocals.

I think they should add a keyboard, 10 buttons, 5 for each hand. That would be pretty cool.

They should stop adding instruments and just add more buttons and better songs. Perhaps a more metal genre?

i would never leave my basement if GH IV had custom song maker and the ability to make good characters. Then i'd just play Gh, guitar and go on UG all day.

see, ppl shouldn't play GH or RB for the game itself, i play it because the music rocks, (even though rock band's track list sucks)and it is fun. I personally think that GH should stick to guitars and lose the other instruments (except for bass in co-op). i mean c'mon, the singing and the drums aren't even that fun.

yea i agree RB's line up sucks so badly, i only like a few songs on there. and guitar is way better than the other instruments.

So yeah. Anyway, Rock Band is far too expensive for any video game

So lighten up, please.

who do homework or build muscle cars lol nice job of finding the two most unlike things ever.i play guitar, have played GH and RB, and am workin ona project 68 Nova and am about to drop a 383 in my 86 chevy stepside.not to big on homework tho =p
