Guitar Hero IV To Feature Non-Guitars?

IGN reports that the May issue of Conde Nast Portfolio magazine sees Activision CEO Bobby Kotick revealing a future direction that would put his company's Guitar Hero franchise on equal footing to last year's newcomer, Rock Band.

Upgrades include additional instruments (including vocals and, we hear separately, drums), as well as "local content" from "local bands."

This corresponds with information Joystiq website has received from a source close to the company, who says that multiple instruments – including a microphone and drumkit – will be a part of the next Guitar Hero game, likely to be called Guitar Hero IV despite its focus on multiple instruments (other potential names: Band Hero and Rockstar Hero).

Also, it is reported that Activision insiders are proud enough of their drum peripheral to say that it will be "superior" to Rock Band's.

Perhaps just as importantly, Activision's weakness in downloadable content could be resolved as early as the release of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith this June, when content is expected to be released regularly, perhaps "even weekly." Also contributing to the company's positive outlook on DLC is the pending merger with Vivendi, potentially giving it unparalleled access to that company's Universal Music Group, the largest family of record labels in the music industry.

I second that greatly. Even more so, the drum setup pictured looks so elaborate that you might as well buy an electronic drum kit. These games have gotten good music into the ears of young people. If nothing else, they'll grow to appreciate what good music is, as opposed to the utter crap that is on the majority of radio stations.

For that alone, these games should be praised. But then, they show that music isn't made by a machine somewhere, but by a person holding an instrument. With any luck, this will inspire kids to get a guitar, bass, drums - maybe even a PA - and try the real thing for themselves.

Compared to American Idol, GH/RB are godsends.

We all know that with the exception of "Green Grass And High Tides", GH3 is much more difficult on the guitar (I'm talking playing both on Expert with any GH guitar, not the horrible Rock Band guitar) and I like it that way. I play Rock Band for the songs, which are better IMO, but way easier. All chords? No thanks, more hammer-ons and pull-offs please. GH4 needs to stay only guitar, it still sells better, is cheaper and while it may not be as fun as RB when you have 4 people playing it, is far superior by yourself.

I don't understand all of the complaining. Its a video game, its fun. Anyone who takes their instrument seriously prefers the real thing than a computer simulation and if guitar hero positivly promotes guitar(and bass)to a wider audience we may see an influx in the amount of people who want to take up the instrument! Also the games introduce entire new sub-genres in rock to many players allowing many to expand their playing beyond what you would normally play. Really the game should be taken with a pinch of salt and played amongst friends on those evenings when there is nothing to do.

I think this'll be great. Always wanted to play the drums but never had the kit to learn, and i wasn't too keen on rock band. Guitar Hero is just a game, it's for enjoyment.If you don't like it , don't have a go at other people for liking it.

The thing is, the way the world was going, turning away from guitar, forgetting one of the main instruments of alot of genres of music. Guitar Hero took this in mind, and used the fact that the gaming world was a very big place. I have to say, Ive been a fan of Guitar hero since the first one. I thought rock the 80's was a joke, and #3 I havnt played yet. But I think #2 was the best of the series.
But, once again, like it has been said here thousands of times, Its just a game. I know a few people who play guitar and play the game as well, and they dont seem to get worse by playing it. Its just about fun, hanging out with some friends, and rocking to some good tunes. Its the people who brag about getting a 5 star 98% on some song that is annoying. Those people really have no other skills to brag about and dont have another hobby.

But as for Guitar Hero including new instruments, I really do think its a joke. Its called Guitar Hero.....not Rock band.

I actually chose to buy a guitar/amp instead of buying a ps2(or 3) and Guitar Hero. The game was fun but I realized I should get the real thing and spend my time learning that rather than pissing away hour after hour just to get good at a video game.

Now I'm just bitter whenever I see GH being played, because I decided not to spend the time to get good at it so it's not really fun for me to play (I get competitive w games, don't like sucking!).

That being said its a great party game, just not for me.

Like some of the people that have commented here, I too am in a real band(although I play bass, not normal guitar), and I do rather enjoy the GH series. Havn't played RockBand yet. But my only real gripe with these games, is the discrimination against bass. Sure, you can play bass by yourself, but only on practice mode(not sure about Rock Band, I just know you can't play bass in the Career Mode, or whatever they call it).

I play Guitar Hero, I also play real guitar, I like playing both, and you can play against or with your friends, and they don't have to be able to play guitar. Everybody is capable of playing an instrument. Rick Allen from Def Leppard plays drums with one arm! Guitar Hero should stick to what made it fun in the first place. Guitar Hero is a cool game to play by yourself or with another person, and Rock Band is more of a party game. Guitar Hero should stick to what it does best, not take another company's idea and (maybe) improve on it.

I have both RockBand and Guitar Hero for xbox, but I also play guitar. I love both games, but not for the 'guitar' aspect. Guitar hero/Rockband and 'real guitar' are in no way related... as someone mentioned, it's just a game.

In my family I am the only one that actually plays the real instrument so I bought the games so we could all play together... and ultimately isn't that what video games are for?...

I personally think that both games are a great tool for developing dexterity (not necessarily accuracy)for those that are aspiring to play guitar (just try playing on expert and see if YOU can keep up)

on a side note: I think that calling someone a 'fag' for playing the game is absolutely ridiculous, and to be quite honest, people like that should be banned from this forum just for the language alone...

Actually RockBand is made by Harmonix (who also developed GH 1 and 2) and GH3 is made by Activision... hence the "battle of the bands".

Wow talk about plagiarism. Activision is really desperate now since they have nothing left to innovate and their game is getting repetetive. Harmonix did the right job of quitting and making Rock Band. Guitar Hero 3 sucked in my opinion. Activision leave it the way it is, add some new features (somehow...) and improve Online, not copy their rival.

I'm so relieved that many of you feel the way I do about this game. I have a friend that is addiicted to games and it seemed sad that whilst he was strumming away on the plastic GuitarHero3 controller his real bass guitar was sat in the corner, neglected as it has been for months now. dragonforce on expert is fun, phucing hard but fun. the advantage to clicking buttons with you fingers is it warms em up for REAL guitar playing which is more fun and button mashing. real crowds sound better than digital ones from my experience. both are fun, cant we all just...get along?

two things... firstly, this site is for music news, not video game news. if you want video game news, go to gamespot. secondly, far too many people are forgetting that GH/RB are video games. they are meant to be fun, and they reach that goal, IMO. i play bass. i have for a number of years now. i also play guitar. and (stay with me here) i also play GH and RB. take a second to think about that. i played an instrument for a decent stretch of time before playing the games. they are nothing more than video games, and at the very least, it gets kids to hear music they wouldn't normally hear, or become interested in playing an instrument. after playing RB, i became very interested in learning to play drums. see? it works! people just have to remember that its a video game and that beating through the fire and flames or green grass and high tides on expert does not make people a true guitar player. it makes them good at a video game. to each his own, guys. live and let live.

Guitar hero wasnt that bad at first, in fact I loved the first two for being able to play some songs that would take forever for me to learn. They really ****ed it up with guitar hero 3 though, and for that they dont deserve to make another one. The problem with the game is all the people who play it and are like oh yeah i can play cult of personality 97% on expert! Since when is hitting 5 buttons to a song more of an acheivement that actually being able to play the effin song!!!! Not to mention the game led to me hating Dragonforce because now everyone who dont know shit about music now loves them, which makes it terrible. I agree with the guy that said rock band is kind of similar to actually playing, execept for guitar, seeing your actually singing and the drums are kind of like a rhythm trainer. Not to mention they actually release DLC like they said unlike GH3. Watch them not release any DLC for the next one. Also watch it get called a pathetic excuse for a game and then everyone forgets about GH. Hopefully that will happen, because if it doesnt, then guitar hero will lead to the end of the music industry.

I personally think that GH should stick to guitars and lose the other instruments (except for bass in co-op). i mean c'mon, the singing and the drums aren't even that fun.
