Taproot Still Heavy

artist: taproot date: 03/18/2004 category: general music news

I Ate Your Microphone reports: Taproot drummer Jarrod Montague recently addressed fans concerns that the band were making their style more melodic with the following comments:

"I am promising you that there will be plenty of heavy material on the new record which is still melodic and still Taproot. I think some of the material is much darker and heavier than any of our other stuff, but we still want it to sound good. I think alot of the reason that everyone thinks "Gift" is so much heavier is because alot of the mixes are muddy and pretty raw whereas on "Welcome" we wanted to be able to hear Steve's harmonies and Phil's basslines, many of which were lost on some parts of "Gift". Heavy is definitely different to every person, but we are making a conscious effort to have some very heavy stuff on the record which we'll all love playing live, as we usually enjoy playing our heaviest stuff most unless we're in a special kind of mood when we feel like playing Art or something.

Let me put it to you this way. My bandmates may disagree, but if "Gift" is a Black record, and "Welcome" is a Blue record, I'm thinking the material on the new record is composed of Reds and Browns; that dreary yet angry and fiery place where hope can still be found. That's just how I see it, but I Promise you the Oldest Taproot fans and the most recent Taproot fans will all find things they love on the record and the material will all make sense together. We're making an amazing record and you all will see that!!!

Let's see. Steve and Mike spent last week trying a new approach to writing which consisted of them coming up with vocal melodies and guitar chord structures at the same time. This way, Steve doesn't have to try to come up with a vocal melody after an entire song is fully constructed; chords can be found which work with what he wants to sing, and then we can build the song rhythmically around those ideas! It's a very exciting approach to songwriting which I feel like many people knew about before and we're just finding it out after 7 years as Taproot! We've worked on 4 of these brand new songs the last couple days and from the drumming point of view, it's very exciting to build rhythms this way- it's letting me play things I could never play before when the rhythm of a guitar riff is already in place. I don't know if this will make sense, but it's very exciting for us and we're in a cool creative time right now, about 2-3 weeks before the recording begins. This is always when the best stuff comes out; when the pressure's on and we're trying to finish up our songs and have to choose from like about 30 songs which 12-15 we're going to record. Very exciting.

ChedZepellin :
You ate my fucking microphone!?!? I was just about to record a song! How dare you!

I remember buying their album a few years back after hearing one of their songs. Day by Day or some crap. Its one of the worst albums ever with that one song being really good. Friggin buttmunches.

Emenius Sleepus :
I can appreciate them for what they are but they sound too much like staind - they tune down their guitars the same way, and Mike was one of the few people to approach the guitar like a 7-string - and he was there before taproot.

Emenius Sleepus :
Mike Mushok that is - the Staind guitarist that sounds so much better than Taproot..

Hey emenius sleepus, your a ***ing idiot, taproot is nothing like staind. Mushok tunes to B or C usually while taproot ALWAYS tunes to A. Taproot is a great band, WAY better than staind who are little bitches who sold out and dont play cool music anymore. Steven's voice is SO much more interesting than Aaron lewis' and steven can do this awesome thing where he goes from singing to screaming really fast. Overall, Taproot > Staind, and they are really just getting started.

For some reason they removed my post, that pisses me off. Anyways as I was saying, emenius sleepus is stupid, because staind tunes to B or C usualy while taproot always tunes to A. Also, steven's voice has a completely different quality than aaron lewis. The riffs are nothing alike because staind has sold out and only makes girly acoustic type songs while taproot has stayed true to their 'roots' and are still heavy. Taproot is the schizzle.

scumfuc_69 :
OK, here's the thing: If they're heavy there would be
no need for this. I'm not a fan of the band and I only read the headline skimmed the article......but whether they're heavy or not cannot be a debate, thet are or they're not!!!! (dumbasses)

Taproot is so insanely unique. I love there sound. Mike Dewolf gets some wicked low end stuff. They aren't enough like Staind to be compared like Eminus Sleepus said, and Mike Mushok isn't any better they just have different styles, i prefer taproot. That makes me so mad that staind would put crap like that so far away song on the pop stations. Staind has let the system take the art they once created and warp it into crap. Don't get me wrng thought Staind is a good band, they just need to stick to there roots and make music from the soul. I could be misjudging but i think theyve started to make sutff just to get radio play, at least that so far away song.

everyones ears hear different things when your listening to music, what you hear is what makes you an individual, so please don't fight over saying ones better or they are both the same because we all have diiferent tastes and we're are all unique and individual. Plus Tool way better than staind or taproot J/K but no seriouslly Tool is awesome and so is Taprrot and staind and etc.....

you don't need a 7 string tuned down 20 steps to sound heavy
