My Chemical Romance Avoid Being Sued By Maine University

My Chemical Romance have agreed to pay Maine University $20,500 over a cancelled concert late last month, avoiding the legal proceedings threatened.

The University’s Student Government had threatened to sue the rock outfit over lost promotional costs, fees to contractors and compensation costs from the axed show on October 27.

This led to a furious backlash from many MCR fans, who claimed the University were taking matters too far and that the band has a genuine reason for missing the show.

Speaking to The Maine Campus magazine, Derek Mitchell, the vice president of student entertainment, said of the agreed compensation: "It sort of came as a surprise that they agreed to do it, but at the same time we're really pleased that they understood the situation and were so quick to agree.

"We are very happy we didn't have to proceed further."

The band’s drummer Bob Bryar suffered a hand injury before the gig, forcing the cancellation. However, at a concert the day after, the band drafted in a replacement – angering Maine University.

Despite his initial refusal to host a rearranged My Chemical Romance show, Mitchell said that he is now open to discussion about the outfit performing again. The university is also going to revise its contracts with bands performing.

This looks revised, but wasn't this posted earlier this week/last week? Maybe these should be labeled with an "Update:" heading or something?

no the last one was telling that mcr could get sued and how the university reacted to them cancelling.
yeah this is kind of an update but it isn't revised

Ha. i wonder if MCR would consider playing there again after this

that pisses me off... mcr has had to cancel shows before, and nobody had a problem with it then. so what makes these punks think they're so special?

how much does someone spend on adverstisement anyways? it better had been at least 20,300.. the amount mcr had to pay.

a hand injury. there's nothing you can do about that. if it doesn't work out, get over it. damn...

i'm sure they'll have no problem paying it off. but it's just the action of threatening to sue that pisses me off. i hope mcr dont play there ever again. i wouldn't.

At least MCR was nice enough to pay them for their loss.

If he really said that I don't think he deserves this money at all.

So, before he gets the money, he turns down the rearranged show. Now after MCR have agreed to pay the money, he wants them to play.

Ridiculous.

Indeed. Anyways, I don't get why MU is being so stupid over this. A drummer gets a hand injury and can't play. It happens. The only drummer that spings to mind that could do it is Travis Barker, but it took him a while to get it down when he broke his arm, and +44's tour got postponed. No one sued over that. For that fact, The White Stripes pulled out of their tour because of Meg White's "anxiety" and as far as I know, there were no lawsuits filed over that.
You'd kind of hope that a university would be a little more understanding, especially since MCR offered to come back and play the show, let alone compensate them. I have no respect for that University.

Jesus I'm always forgetting Maine is a state. It's like the country ends with Vermont. Anyways, why would anybody sue over a missed concert.

im really surprised that no one has tried to sue led zeppelin over the postponement of the big concert...for...like.....costing them to change their flights and rebook their hotels and other such ridiculous fees and charges. it was looking really likely in the middle of the big 'sue the band for cancelling/postponing the concert' craze that's going on right now.

I think that the school should of extended a hand and try to reschedule the show to keep fans happy. It shows the Univ of Maine lack tact or the reality that shit happens and there are better resolutions than shooting off their mouth with threats. In the real world, people like that don't get far, I see it every day in my line of work, they only end up screwing themselves.

I think MRC had a good reason and is trying the darndest to keep as many shows going as they can. I hope Bob gets well soon, it's just not the same with any replacement member.

It didn't help MCR that they found a replacement drummer for the NEXT night's show. That's what pissed off MU; they understood that Bob was injured, and they would have let it go right there if the band hadn't managed to play somewhere else the very next night. Sounds to me like MCR didn't want to play in Maine in the first place.

Lame it sounds like to me that the drummer injured his hand and they couldnt play so they had to cancel a show. The day of the cancelled show they probably found a replacement and had him flown in to restart the tour ASAP then MU was just crying like bitches **** them if i was MCR i wouldn't have paid a dime

lets please not turn this into another mcr-bashing thread ...

about the article, i think its stupid that mcr had to pay anything ... its not like they could help it that Bob was injured.

Shows get canceled, it happens...They should add some kind of thing to the tickets saying there is a possibility that the show may be canceled in the event of an unpredictable and unavoidable reason. That way people can't sue over it if it happens. I agree they should be able to get a refund on their tickets but people want to get money for traveling to see them and all that. it's ridiculous, but people are greedy and i guess we can't do anything about that.

By finding someone who already knew a fair number of their songs and giving him a very minimal amount of time to rehearse with the band rather than needlessly cancel shows? No, that's called being a professional. Everyone feels it when a show gets canceled; even if the band doesn't need to care financially, they don't enjoy disappointing fans. Frat boys shouldn't be allowed to act like they have valid complaints. lol

Oh sure once they've got money off them they'll be happy to just reschedule. I'm not a big fan of MCR but thats really unfair. You can't draft someone in on the same day as the gig, so there was nothing they could do. The people who wanted to sue them are just money-grabbing wankers
rant over
