Liam Gallagher To Front 'Supergroup'

artist: oasis date: 01/09/2008 category: general music news
Liam Gallagher To Front 'Supergroup'

The Oasis singer will be joined by former Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown and Freebass - a bass guitar trio made up of former Smiths star Andy Rourke, New Order's Peter Hook and Primal Scream's Gary 'Mani' Mounfield - for the Manchester Versus Cancer charity concert on February 23.

A concert source told Britain's The Sun newspaper, "Liam and Ian Brown will join Freebass on vocals for their first full live show.

"It will be one of the musical events of the year - Manchester music fans will be in rock 'n' roll heaven."

The show, at Manchester's MEN Arena, is also expected to feature The Verve, Happy Mondays, Inspiral Carpets and James.

Andy Rourke, who is also organizing the concert, said, "This year's show is going to be talked about for years to come. We've got some of the biggest bands of the moment lined up, as well as some legendary acts."

The band are expected to perform at a number of British music festivals, including Glastonbury, V and The Isle of Wight Festival.

The Freebass collaboration is the latest in a long-line of supergroups.

In 1988, The Traveling Wilburys combined the musical talents of former Beatle George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne.

More recently, Blur's Damon Albarn joined former Clash bassist Paul Simonon, ex-Verve and sometime Blur guitarist Simon Tong and drummer Tony Allen to form The Good, the Bad and the Queen.

Thanks for the info to Azcentral.com.

Decembero :
Its good for the fans of these bands, no doubt about it.

It would be awesome to see a collaboration of your favourite musicians join together on stage for charity. But I'm just not a fan of Oasis.

How can it be a super group if you've never hear of them?

Well, at least it's for a good cause.

I'm not a huge fan of later Manchester tunes, like the whole Manc Britpop thing. But Factory era manchester was great, therefore, props to Peter Hook, he's a a legend, haha. Also, Primal Scream are great too.

yeah this isn't really a supergroup...first of all oasis is highly overrated. i'm not saying this wont sound good, just not a supergroup. When I think of supergroup i think more of Audioslave, VR, Blind Faith types

pretty sure that this "super group" collectively have sold more records than all of audioslave. so maybe its just calling them a super group. i mean soundgarden weren't that big.

the smiths were and are huge. oasis are.
(whether they are good or not [which im unconvinced is irrelevant]
the rest i guess are more british fame but still
i think saying they are not a super group is a bit far.

What are you talking about, The Clash, Blur and The Verve were all massive. Possibly not the verve, but in my eyes a combination of the Clash and Blur on its own would easily be enough to earn the title supergroup

Not a supergroup?

You've got an element from Joy Division, Stone Roses, Oasis, Primal Scream and The Smiths. They are 5 of the most important bands in music history...I don't get how you can say that it's not a supergroup.

I'm curious as to how it will sound though...3 bassists...

GBATQ comprises off two people who already featured in blur, a random drummer and fair enough a mamber of the clash. Not exactly in the same league as Harrison (i mean he was only a beatle for ****s sake), Dylan, Orbison, Petty and Lynne i think you'll agree. If you don't agree your a retard.

Paul Lambeth :
Supergroup normally refers to a group of virtuousos, each to their instrument - Rudess (keyboard), Peart (drums), Lee (bass) and Morse (guitar) I'd consider a supergroup.
POSTED: 01/09/2008 - 06:52 pm / quote |
Paul Lambeth :
Kurapica, I'd be surprised if they all played their specific instruments - some of the bassists will probably play guitar or keyboard (or harmonica).

jinkymann, although I don't agree with this specific definition of a supergroup, I consider Joy Division one of the most important bands in the creation of modern music.

The Verve were never considered huge because they broke up so quickly, but when they released Bittersweet Symphony everyone was saying they were going to be one of the best bands of this generation...then they broke up not too long after, which I still find pretty dang funny

Yah, that's why you don't understand how this is a supergroup.
Anyone who denies this is clearly not familiar with how important The Smiths, The Stone Roses, and Joy Division are to British music.
Also, I'm surprised nobody's pointed this out yet, but Ian Brown is palying with Mani. That's half the Stone Roses...Just saying...It might happen...
Anybody know who's drumming?
