Different Music Styles

Okay in this weeks article/Lesson I'm going to to show you some licks commenly used by Guitar Players such as, Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix and others. Because if you don't have some tools to play with, it's going to be pretty hard when you have to just get up and improvise. It also helps when you can play different styles of music. Not only so you can switch seemlessly between them but so you can incorporate them into your playing, widening your playing style and abilities. So without further talk let's jump into it!

e----3-----5-3h4p3-6-3h5p3--3--3----3-----------
b---3--6-3-----------------6--6----3------------
g-5b-----------------------------5b----5br5p3---
d---------------------------------------------5-
a-----------------------------------------------
E-----------------------------------------------

This is a lick you will see alot by Stevie Ray Vaughan, it is used mostly in songs like Texas Flood.

e---------------------------------------------
b-11b-----8h11p8------8h11p8----8h11p8----8-8-
g----------------10----------10--------10-----
d---------------------------------------------
a---------------------------------------------
E---------------------------------------------

e------------------------------------------------
b------------------------------------------------
g-10---8h9p8-------------------------------------
d---10------10-8--8h10p8-------------8-----------
a------------------------10p8/6h8\10---10p8/6----
E--------------------------------------------8---

This here is a Eric Clapton ish lick found mostly in "have you ever loved a woman" The last slide Hammer on Pull off stuff is very fast and kind of slurred, Stevie Does that some to, it's found in Jazz alot.

e------5--------------------------
b-8p6----6---5-6-5h6p5-------5----
g----------7-----------7-5h7---7--
d---------------------------------
a---------------------------------
E---------------------------------

This kind of has a Sanana sound to it, you might reconize the "8p6" from black magic woman. It is all around the D minor scale.

e---------------------------------------------
b----5-------------------8--8-----------10----
g----5h7p5-------5-------7--7h9p7-------------
d----------7-5-7---7--------------10-7--------
a---------------------------------------------
E-5T------------------------------------------

This is like A jimi, SRV type lick. Jimi used the double stops alot. And I find myself using them countles time, they have such a great sounds and feel, and they fill up a solo nicely when you don't want chords, but you don't want single notes either.

Now first I want to say that all of these guitarist have many more licks and phrases. These are just one of each, they are not limited guitarists at all, whether you like them or whether you don't. But from playing them a good bit this will give you a jump start on some different "sounds" to use.

If this helped you any I would incourage you to look more into each style of these, and other guitar players as well, if what you play does not fit into this kind of sound. Because if you play metal, or country, or something else you're not going to get much use from this lesson. But again just have fun, to me it's always great to learn new licks, I feel more Free on the guitar, untill next time just have fun practicing!

What is the T in the Jimi Hendrix/SRV solo? I thought it was tapping, but I couldn't understand the relivence of it.

Probably "Trill"? Meaning put some vibrato on it, like you're bending but not very far. It's a great blues technique (actually it's a great technique for just about anything). Hear it on anything with Paul Kossoff in it (from Free), he's got a really amazing vibrato style.
