Guitar Tricks Episode 2

author: metal jello date: 01/12/2008 category: junkyard

So here's my continued article about guitar tricks. Hope you enjoy.

Wah sound from a toggle switch- If you have a stratocaster or guitar with similar pickups and knobs, here's how to make you guitar have an instant wah. Simply put your first tone knob (neck tone) all the way down, and your second (bridge puickup) tone knob all the way up. Play a bend or chord and switch your toggle (pickup selector) switch all the way back and forth. It makes an expressive wah noise the can be used with bends.

Divebomb- THis is way too easy. Just play a note and pull the tremolo bar down as far as you can without breaking your guitar, or as far as you want.

"hot chick whistle" (the sound that characters like the Loony toons make when they see a hot girl. Woo-woo)- Take a slide, tremolo bar, battery, or anything smooth and round like that. Lay it down on the high E string past the 21 fret. Pick and wipe it closer to the bridge and stop it, then play the same thing put slide down.

Slide Tapping- Try playing any tapping riff you know but, on the highest note that you tap, slide it up.

Here's an example-

T T T
e[--5-8-12/---5-8-12/---5-8-12/---]
B[--------------------------------]
G[--------------------------------]
D[--------------------------------]
A[--------------------------------]
E[--------------------------------]

Super Bending- Bend the 14th fret on the G string. Now, with your picking hand, grab the string between your fretting hand and the nut. Pull the string in either the same or opposite direction you're bending with the fretting hand. Now you can make your bends longer, faster, more intense, and you can even add a tremolo to it.

Stutter Effect- If you have two pickups and two volume knobs, you can achieve this great effect. Turn one volume all the way down and one all the way up. Play a note, let it ring, and then switch between pickups with the pick up selector (toggle) switch.

Play With Your Teeth- Okay, to play with my teeth, I pull back my lower jaw, pull back my upper lip, and strike the strings with the FRONT of my teeth.

Tap Harmonics- To tap a harmonic, fret the 3rd fret on the low E string, now, tap the 15 fret lightly and quickly. Did you hear the harmonic ringing noise? GOOD. To tap a harmonic, just tap the note an octave higher past the 12th fret. Try even playing entire scales in harminics! It's too much fun.

Karate Chop Tremolo- You have probably seen this done before. Just play and hold a note, and litterally lighly hit the tremolo bar down quickly. It gives you an expressive and quick tremolo effect.

Machine gun- You need a delay pedal to do this, but it is so much fun. I found this out with my Pocket Pod and my Gibson Explorer. Put your delay pedal on fast and turn the level of the delay all the way up and the "feedback" setting all the way up. Now just hit either a harmonic or just slap at the strings.

Mario ring- To get the Mario sound effect of when Mario jumps up to get coins, play the 12 fret on the B string. Now tap the 15 fret on the B string and quickly slide off. Just play the over and over until you hear it and you'll get it down in no time.

e[--------------------------------------]
B[--12hammer15/------12hammer15/--------]
G[--------------------------------------]

Thanks for reading my article, I hope you use some of these effects. Rock on.

I've figured most of this stuff out on my own just from ****ing around on my guitar so much (except for the whammy bar ones because I hate those things). There's a lot of cool things that you can do on the guitar without using any effects.

Let me further elaborate on Alcho's post. I think it should be more like this:
e|-----[5]-----[5]----[5]-|
b|---[5]-----[5][5][5]-[ 5]----[5]----|
with all of those being harmonics.

thats when he gets the coins..this tab shows u the noise he makes when he jumps towards the coins

POSTED: 01/15/2008 - 06:51 pm / quote |

for grabbing the coins i prefer pinch harmonics at the 17th fret on the A string, then the D string, i used to play it with natural harmonics on the 5th fret as above, but this way sounds perfect to me, plus it is closer to the "jump" effect in the article, so easier to play probably.

I learned that to play with teeth, it's much easier to just play legato and that picking with the teeth was just moving your head and jaw up and down to make it look realistic, and that's pretty much what I do. Sometimes, I also take my guitar behind the head.

These seem to be pretty basic things... not that nobody will get anything out of these. It's nice to have these sorts of lessons, so maybe you could add sound effects at the beggining of a song or something.

dampen the strings with ur right hand, then sort of tap with ur pick on the highest few frets on low e, scraping the pick slightly on the string - that worked for me

Hey, fact fans! You can also play tap harmonics on the 5th & 7th frets above the left-hand note, though they're not an octave above, but some other interval. Maybe a fourth or fifth. I don't know.

Erm.... to get a 'machine gun' effect, just baby slap the strings wih your HAND on the 1,2,3rd frets.... or to get a helicopter noise, baby slap those strings with your hand on the 21st fret.... Tom Morello uses this technique in the intro to Audioslave's ' Cochise '.

No, it's actually a studio effect Jimmy Page added in, I can't remember exactly what it is, but it can't be reproduced very well live. In 2 Zeppelin DVDs, and 2 Live CDs and about 4 bootlegs they never play the intro of the song.

The beginning of Black Dog is a tape effect. To get a similar sound, you can pick the A string with the side of the pick. Some people say there's a distinct other sound in there, and that's a 2nd fret on the G string, if you can hear it.

One of my favorite tricks is something I copped off a Van Halen song, can't remember which one though...

Basically just play a lick like |h2h3p0h2h3:| repeated ad nauseum while you slide a finger from your picking hand around the string to pull out harmonics. It works best on lower strings.

Just turn the volume knob down, play any single note(with a pick or hammering on the fret)when you play the note, turn the volume knob up,then, play an other note, turn the volume knob down again, and repeat it again.

It's really easy and it sounds awesome...if you do it right. :P

Here's a couple of other tricks to try:

Zakk Wylde's 'flanger' trill trick- Took me a little bit to get down, but really cool when you get it. Just do a trill on a low string (I prefer the A string) around the first couple of frets, like 3 and 5, and very lightly slide the pinky side of your palm over your pickups from the bridge to the neck. Takes some practice to get the 'very light' touch down, and works better with a signal booster like a BBE Sonic Maximizer.

A-3h5p3h5p3h5p3h5(etc.)
while sliding your palm on the strings over the pickups from the bridge to the pickup.

Steve Vai/Joe Satriani two handed legato trick-Use your pick hand to bar the strings (press enough to fret your high E string and mute the rest) and do pull-off's/hammer-on's/both. Simple as that! It's also fun to move your pick hand around while still doing the legato-phrases with your fret hand. It works best for me to use my pick hand's index finger (pointed down) to bar the strings. Here's an example:

e-5 10p7p 10p7p 10p7p 10p7p
B-5 < >
G-5 < >
D-5
A-5 < >
E-5 < >

When doing the pull-off's, just do it as if you were pulling off to an open string-10p7p0 10p7p0-but it'll be 5 since that's what you're fretting with your pick hand. Think of your pick hand as a temporary capo!

Here is another trick. Play a harmonic over your pickups (you know with your strumming hand) and at the exact same time pluck your tremelo bar with your pinky. You only want the springs to vibrate. It doesn't last long and your timing has to be perfect. Keeping the springs vibrating is a bear but it makes a cool effect. Does anyone else use this but me?

No, it's actually a studio effect Jimmy Page added in, I can't remember exactly what it is, but it can't be reproduced very well live. In 2 Zeppelin DVDs, and 2 Live CDs and about 4 bootlegs they never play the intro of the song.

Its called the waking of the guitars... it's got something to do with jimmy pages dream of having an army of guitars, so it might be a multi track thing

use ur left hand to pluck the low E and send the bar down really low and just before you yank it back up catch the 3rd fret harmonic and use the bar accordingly to get the sound.

5 frets above would ring a harmonic 2 octaves, up, and 7 frets up will ring out a fifth. Also, 4 frets (or 9, they do the same) will ring out a major third from the note you have fretted.

Actually there is a way you can get a violin sound. its using a 'jellifish' pick. Check out jellifish.com for more info, these things can make neat litle plectrum effects, cool plucking sounds and more. Yes! I do, it's awesome.

Use your bridge pickup with a bunch of distortion. Next, take your picking hand and you must barely touch the string (G string) with the side of your palm. I like to use the little space where your pinky finger begins and your actual hand ends. Now, keep your hand in that position and slide from the bridge, towards the neck slowly (not too slow). MEANWHILE, your fretting hand is doing pulloffs on the G string, on the 4th fret to the 2nd fret to the open string continuously (h4-p2-p0). So basically, you have to do pulloffs, while making the strings harmonic. Hopefully my explanation isn't too confusing. What this youtube video to see this kid doing it http://youtube.com/watch?v=r9nZcezJOJQ. (It's at 12) Also, I believe time consumer is played a 1/2 step down, so do that if you want it to sound exact.
