Is Rap Music Really Bad Music?

So, here we are again. On the topic of rap. Is rap cr@p? Is rap music pointless and dumb? Well some might yes and some might say no. I myself do not necisarily like it, but on the other hand, I do not think it is pointless and dumb. Why? Well that's the reason I'm writing this article. I wanted to try and figure out if I like rap...or not.

Rap music isn't all bad: Yes, when you think of rap, you think of cursing, people in over sized clothing, F this and F that right? Wrong. There are just as many rap songs that are good, compared to rap songs that are not all that great. Some have good messages:

"Don't make the same mistake I did. Go to school. Get an education. Be what ever you want to be. Have self respect."

This is a message I came across when listening to "I can" by Nas. Many other rap artists have been putting messages like this in their songs. I think it's a great thing to do, and people listen. If it's your favorite artist, of course you're going to listen. Their your influence, you look up to them.

Some Rap music is bad: This is the part where I get to F this and F that. Yes, you may have had a hard life, isn't there another way to get it out other then yelling "f*uck this!" all the time? Go to a cicyatrist or something. And with all the younger fans, it's putting ideas into their heads. It's not okay to kill people. Many songs talk about killing people. It's not okay to mistreat woman. Many songs talk about mistreating woman. What if everone started listening to rap, and got the idea taht's its ok to do these activities? Society would be mad, crazy and so on. Don't get me wrong -- all rap isn't like this.

So, I've brought myslef to a conclusion. I do like some rap music. And i am going to say that some rap music is not crap music. You may agree or disagree. That is not my problem. As long as people know that when rap songs talk about killing and such, that is does not meen for you to go out and kill. I don't think that those are the intentions of rappers when they write songs, and if it is, well...somethings not right there. All rap is is someone talking fast to a constant beat, usually about vulgar issues or how they are so cool or how everyone shoots them, it is for teenagers who can't find it in themselves to actually discover the music they actually like. Have you ever actually heard of a 20 year old who is actually mature who listens to rap? All Eminem did was start writing about topics he got told to by his producers, instead of his normal, im gonna kill you bitch lyrics. In these new lyrics, all he talks about are problems and how he isn't actually what he depicted himself to be in the first album. Someone should actually define what music is, maybe able to sing outside of a single octave, or maybe by playing some kind of instrument, but that would destroy rap, and the labels couldn't have that.

Well, some of the artists DO try to send a good message while others are talking a bunch of junk. But if you seriously think about it there are rock bands that are the same way. Slipknot says crazy stuff about f- the world and talks of killing people. Yet there are some songs sending a good message. You can't really determine whether rap is crap or rap is great. It's all a matter of opinion. Actually, friends of mine that like rap tend to think of rock as junk.

Rap is Bad poetry put to a 4 bar phrase of music over and over again. Ok, there are some rappers who have really good lyrics, but that dosen't take away from the fact that the MUSIC is bad. We'll never get to the bottom of whether rap sucks or not. Some like it, some don't. But I'm sick of hypocrites who hate rap and love, say, Linkin Park. Or people who moan about how rap makes no sense and then go and lesson to Metallica telling them how their lifestyle determines their deathstyle. People who declaim the fathers of rap (like the NWA) and then go right home and listen to Rage Against the Machine. Rap music is stereotyped to a ridiculous point - it's not all about violence. Now that we've defined music, let's get into this a little deeper. All genres of music have bad and good artists. Rock, Punk, Pop, R&B, Jazz, Rap, Blues, Country, they've all got really bad songs and artists. "Bad" is a subjective term. My idea of what's bad and your's will not be the same. Music has been constantly evolving over years to the point where someday soon there will be no more "genres", there will just be music. There is more intermingling between genres now than ever before. You have rap groups influenced by the Beatles, country sounds more rock than ever, a lot of rock bands use rap, Kid Rock plays country, and pop and punk have merged into the Green Day clones.
Yes, some rap music is bad. Like all other forms of music it is beginning to get repetitive. Most of the popular songs on the radio and MTV are all about the sex, and drugs. Kind of reminds me of the 80's. Hair Bands ruled the airwaves, and songs about sex, drugs, and rock and roll were the norm. Most of the bands started to sound the same and then get repetitive, then the Hair Era died, killed by grunge. The bands who survived the Hair Era, survived because they evolved. As they grew older their outlook on life changed, their influences changed, and the music changed. Rap is going through the same thing. Rap is the most popular music in the world right now. We have rappers from other countries (Canada, England, China) beginning to break into the mainstream. To be continued...

There is good rap out there if you will take the time and open your mind to find it. I'll give you a few to look for: 1. if you like live instruments and think that rappers have no talent to be subtle and actually play, check out The Roots album "things fall apart" and any Beastie Boys album since the first.
2. opposed to bad language, like older types of rap, check out Jurassic 5's song "Great Expectations"
3. a fan of poetry and lyrical wordplay, check out Common, Nas, 2Pac, Eminem, A Tribe Called Quest, Talib Kwali, Raekwon the Chef, the Black Eyed Peas
4. Outkast, all of their albums have been classics, and all have been different from the one before. Check out their new one Speakerboxxx/ The Love Below. It's the most experimental thing they've done yet.
5. For all you Rage Against the Machine fans, check out Public Enemy's "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back" and "Fear of a Black Planet"

Good Charlott,Simple Plan and Limbizket is crap.YET THEY ARE THE BIG BANDS RIGHT NOW!!! Franz Ferdinan is only 39th in the charts. Eminem, or rap in general, isn't the only rapper/genre that talks about killing people, etc. Ever listened to the Smashing Pumpkins? Some of their songs are about the lead singer, Billy Corgan, wanting to kill his parents. Also, rap doesn't have nothing but killing in its music. The only rap some of you guys have probably been exposed to is probably G-Unit or something. All of you guys have to have a broader sense of listening to music, if you really love music. Believe it or not, there is more to rap the snare-kick-snare-kick "I've killed more poeple then you" kinda thing. I've produced tracks filled to the brim with musical theory, believe it or not, over 80% of songs have sales of their beat, meaning the beat has to be catchy and not too repetitive.

Have you ever noticed that the verses of every rock song have the exact same chord and strum patterns in them? Hmmm, reminds me of the same styling that rap beats have.

Lyrically there are some bad writers out there, but musically ther are some bad guitarists out there too.

I'm a freestyler, and have done so live, freestyling is far above most of the stuff you here, and far away from the 'banged your momma' freestlyes of 8 mile.

The freestlyes I rap are topical and true on the spot kinda thing, when me and my friends have a freestyle session, we just pass the mic/tapedeck/rapping stick and freestlye striaght out of our souls and create something thats is enjoyable and fun.

Just like you improvise a solo, freestlye rap is produced thorugh practice and skill, although there is no theory to it, it is still a valid talent.

Rap music can be entertaining. It does not take the same amount of musical talent as some genres of rock music do, but then again, nobody has ever claimed that Biggie Smalls is more musically talented than Jimmy Page. Think of rap like "Dude Where's My Car?" "Dude Where's My Car?" was not produced with the intention of being the next "Citizen Kane" or "Godfather." Rap music cannot be compared to rock music without getting into objective opinions. But some rap can just be monotous and annoying. Another Metalhead friend told me that Music is like a Tree. There is no BAD music. Only good music. Just different points of view. The tree consists of Rock, Metal, Jazz, Fusion, Punk, etc.

Rap, Hip-hop, Rave, Pop, Dance aren't on the tree for an accurate reason. They are not music. They are a drum machine, a Synthesizer and a person's talking sped up using that Synthesizer.

That's my opinion only. 90% of people in my school are totally anti-Rocker/Metalhead. The wankers....

The only rap worth mentioning is anything before like 1994 when they had good melodies with actual insruments(or synthesized versions of them) and didnt back their tracks with just a drum machine and a repeating motiff, also australian rap/hip-hop is good because they are really just taking the piss out of serious individuals like
