Featured Band: Displacements

Displacements is the name of our lovely band. We chose this name as we wanted something a bit different I suppose. We got it from a chapter in a book I was reading and we all agreed it was cool! (first and last book) I think it means out of place, not meant to be there sort of thing!

We are a band from Hull or Ull as the locals call it (its in england by the way). There are 3 memebers of my crazy band:
- Kris Gowland the drummer,
- Simon Herring the bassist/vocals,
- Nick Cobley lead guitar/vocals.
we are all 17.

We all really like the same type of music, this is mainly pop unk/punk/rock apart from Kris who also enjoys rap! Our main influence is Blink 182, but Nirvana, Finch, New Found Glory etc influence our music!

Our first gigg was over a year ago. There were alot of kids our age their. They liked our music (back then we did covers as well as our own). We played a 1 hour set which was great as the kids were still dancing and stuff all the way through! We have improved so much since then. We decided to start up as a band because we were all sick of just playing for our own benefit, we wanted to entertain people and stay out of trouble haha!

I would just like to say I think our band is great, we really appeal to all genres of music, we write so well together and get on great (which I think is very rare these days!) We love people listening to us and giving us feedback on our songs even if it isn't realy great feedback for us. We are entertainers and are very serious about our music, but love to have fun! If you like catchy rocky punk songs give us a listen!

alright here i go with some advices.
your singer need to take some vocal lessons. he sounds out of tune in many parts of the song. guitar level is decent although lil more practice cant hurt. the drummer need to practice more and learn more skills and techniques. same with bass player. but most importantly, the singer need to learn how to sing properly.

Be what you are and make music you like. About the vocals, sing louder, and it you wont sound so much like a high school band. Dont worry about being in key, nobody cares. And if they do, the music you make wont ever be exactly what they are looking for anyways.

We practise as much as we can usually twice a week thats alot more than some bands we know. We've never taken vocal or guitar lessons. My singing is bad on better off before fair play, u chose our worst song, But u say dont spend time defending my band, i have the right to, its important to me, U obviously have a problem as you keep comin back to leave more comments dude so give us a break yer? concentrate on some more important things.

Firstly, the guitar could have been given a cuplemore goes - it's a recordin ya don't have to do it in one take - take timend get rid of those duff notes.

Not bad apart from that and that fact that the singer is puttin on an american accent - yeah it's hard not too when covering american sogns but dude if it's your own, find your real singing voice we're British man!

I listened to 'Better Off Before', it starts off pretty good but the verses sound boring. I like the sound of the guitar at the verses, but I was imagining being someone in the crowd at a show and hearing it. The start would be cool if it was played with more energy but the verses are too boring and there are too many off them. If you work on that song I think you have something. That's what I think anyways.

I said you guys shouldn't spend time defending yourselves because then it looks like you NEED defending. Trying to defend yourselves just makes people want to make fun of you more. Also, I have only practiced with my band two times, and I'm sorry to say we're already better then you. That's not even me being cocky, its completely objective. Also, not having guitar or voice lessons is not something to be proud of. Without guitar lessons, your ability to play the guitar will plateau, meaning you will come to a point where you can't get any better. Also, teaching yourselves you learn bad habits. If your going to be a pop punk band, at least be cool like Sum 41 and have cool guitar. You'll need lessons to play like them however.

Hey man, here's all i can offer to you. Your music seems to be very ..hmm. Puls-ish? like it isnt ambient at all, it has no flow to it, it just pulses. I'd also maybe work on a few songs where your verse and chrous arent power chords, a small lead. Its not hard to memorize a scale and create a lead riff out of it. All i can help ya with, the potential is there.

Here's my suggestions. ANYONE will sound bad vocally without any reverb added. Its analagous to singing into a steel wall. Do you have the equipment to add the reverb? I agree with the pulse-y nature. The drums seem to be playing the guitar part exactly, note for hit. Try varying their rythyms. Also, the bass guitar mirrors the guitar note for note. An example: Better off before. Get a little variation with the bass lines, and the sound will be less mass produced and more full. In BOB, I suggest adding a riff over the intro power chords. No problem man. Anyway, I listened to "Lockeroom" or whichever one that was. The guitar and such are better, but my problem here is the vocals. On notes where you hold for more than a second or so, you seem to die out. Make sure you keep the quality of the note for the duration. Also, pronounce your words more forcefully. Make sure to pronounce the first letter of each word (i.e the C in Catch). Also, make sure T's and S's dont get lost, pronounce them. If the song is emotional, sing it as such. You cant be passive in vocals unless the song is meant to be passive. Well, thats it (I can only get BOB and this song.) Good luck, later -RiffHero

okay..I only listened to one song...better off before. Instrumentally it started off decent. Had sort of a garage retro sound, but then the vocals came in... and sorry to be harsh, but they were really bad. Okay turn the mic down on the vocals because your voice is way over the instruments, and it sounds like you are reading from a script. If you get your voice a little lower than the instruments, then you'll have to put some energy in to make yourself louder. I think it will give you some slight distortion to your voice which could probably be a good thing. I think you guys should drop the whole idea of sounding like pop punk. Instrumentally keep doing what your doing, but try some different things with your voice.

well, after all this time I can't say I like most of your music, (mainly cause I am not much of a punk fan) but good luck with the whole band thing. At least you have a band, unlike me who is stuck in the middle of nowhere, without any drummers.

well thanks for that comment after all the slagging off you've done on us on this forum - fair play on the taste thing if you dont like punk - u dont like it simple as- weve got new material and all the motherfukers who have dissed us on here have helped us write better songs and now we are playing with touring bands regularly so thats aceeeeeeee!!!!
