In Utero is hailed as the greatest Nirvana album, but do you really know whatthe songs mean?
Serve The Servants - This song is like an autobiography talking about the Nirvana exerience and becoming famous. Also, it talks about a so-called witch hunt on Courtney Love, and is a sarcastic response to the emphasis put on the divorce of Kurt's parents.
Scentless Apprentice - Based off the novel by Patrick Suskind - "Perfume" about a perfume maker who kills virgins for their scent.
Heart-Shaped Box - A song of themes, mostly co-dependancy. I would also have to say this song is directed at Courtney.
Rape Me - In Kurt's words this song was about a guy who rapes a girl, goes to jail, and later gets raped. In my own words, I would have to say this song is a shot to the media.
Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle - The story of Frances Farmer. She was claimed insane and was lobotmized.
Dumb - A song dominated by drug related themes. Also talks of the care-free happiness involved in being dumb.
Very Ape - An attack on "Macho Men".
Milk It - Another song talking about co-dependancy. It has a rather medical theme to it.
Pennyroyal Tea - A song about making tough decisions and the choices that surround those decisions. Also talking of the guilt after the decisions.
Radio Friendly Unit Shifter - Kurt said this song was a "throwaway". A bunch of random lines of poetry put together. The title comes from "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and its slick, radio friendly sound.
Tourette's - This song is nothing. The title explains all the screaming. When you have tourette's you shout out random things, and that's all Kurt does in this song.
All Apologies - Many say this song is about Courtney and Francis, but if you look at the lyrics, not one line in that song refers or applies to them. I would have to say that this is another media-directed song.
Gallons Of Rubbing Alcohol Flow Through The Strip - This song is a poem to words. An improv-style song.
Well those are my interpretations of the songs, pretty straight forward.

: I think that In Utero was really Nirvana's "masterpiece" and you explained the songs good, but i really think that they have much more depth and meaning then what you said. And honestly i dont think anyone can explain what Kurt was thinking when he wrote these songs.. Other wise cool articlePOSTED: 11/30/2004 - 11:52 am / quote |

Oh yeah and I forgot that you are one of the greatest songwriter of all time. You are know as the leader of a generation. You have some of the greatest albums of all time. Oh wait no you aren't. You aren't shit compared to Kurt Cobain. I don't get why all you people who hate Nirvana or something think that he was a horrible songwriter. You all think the same. Hey, at least Ozzy's still around...he didn't pussy out and kill himself like Cobain did. Just the fact that you think Nirvana is one of the best bands that ever was shows how little you know about music. That and the fact that you're only 16.
Cobains lyrics for the most part are incoherent babble, just crap that he wrote down during his heroine trips. You can call them deep or find whatever meaning in his songs that you want, but in the end, you're looking for something that's not there. The entire band is just a group of mediocre musicians that Mtv decided to sell to a bunch of spoiled, bratty, pissed off teen-agers that think their life is so tough. Nirvana was a fad, just like boy bands and nu-metal, it's just that they weren't around long enough to see the popularity of their crap decline. If Cobain hadn't killed himself and was still around today, he would just be another one of those loser one-hit wonders that people make fun of on VH-1 every week. Nobody would know who he is or even give a shit about him, and people would see his music for what it really is- crap.POSTED: 12/02/2004 - 01:34 am / quote |

: No, but the Beatles were good anyway. And what's this about Smells Like Teen Spirit being a good song with decent riffs/solos? Wow, four powerchords for a chorus/intro, two notes for a verse and a solo that lasted for about 30 seconds consisting of about 10 different notes. Wow, really intelligent.
Nirvana are shit, people get over it. Kurt Cobain was NOT a good songwriter. Good songwriters are:
Roger Waters David Gilmour David Bowie Neil Young Bruce Springsteen etc.
Not Kurt Cobain. My views are biased yes, but at least I don't have my head up my arse like all you Nirvana fans.
If you people want good lyrics, here's a band you may've heard of: Pink Floyd, maybe? The Wall, Dark Side of the Moon, Animals, Wish You Were Here etc. have incredibly meaningul lyrics, but then again, all you dumbass 14 year olds wouldn't be able to understand lyrics that are good would you? Far too complicated. And as for bands better than Nirvana, well...
Dire Straits Guns 'n' Roses AC/DC Megadeth Metallica Pink Floyd U2 Velvet Revolver Neil Young Bob Marley & The Wailers The Jimi Hendrix Experience Crowded House Deep Purple Black Sabbath Green Day Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band
Yeah, just to name a few.
If Kurt Cobain hadn't killed himself, he wouldn't have ended up starting a 'cult' like he has. He would just be another one-shot, short lived fad, aka Busted/McFly.
And hats off to anyone who can reply with a pro-Nirvana post that tops this.

Now In my opion... Nirvana was great. They had Grohl who turned from being a drummer to a guitarist and singer and hit the charts on both. Cobain had lyrics that were so just randon or set on a topic that was just different that people loved it.
Now people say That Nirvana sucks. I have to dissagree. there are plenty of bands that are worse than them. Yes there are better bands. But if you don't like nirvana ask your self...do you like the beatles.....POSTED: 12/03/2004 - 04:13 pm / quote |

: personally i dont like or dislike nirvana, however, thinking of the time, they were the only band there, so the had no competition, but kurt was a good guitarist, or songwriter? please. has anyone here ever heard of pink floyd, or even led zepplin? and lastly, one of nirvana's songs have any meaning, kurt and the band were just a bunch of potheads who were able to match a power chord progression, a bassline, and a beat. congratulations on that...POSTED: 12/03/2004 - 08:22 pm / quote |

: Cool article, but unless you have a direct telepathic link with the late K.C., none of us has the insight to try and define his lyrics. This guy seemed to have a good interpretation, but ultimately nobody can say what each song honestly meant. They might mean something to you when you listen to them, but they might have meant something totally different to Kurt.POSTED: 12/04/2004 - 03:41 am / quote |

: Wow... This is foolish. I know a lot about Nirvana, so here's a little lesson: The original recording of scentless apprentice was at a live performance. It was called "Chuck Chuck Fo Fuck" and was instrumental, with a tune similar to that of the childhood name game. It evolved into what it is now, and maybe kurt threw in something about that novel later. Tourette's is hardly a "random" song. It's a shot at how he was portrayed as a cold, punk-ass rockstar. Due to the old recordings, rape me was definitely about a guy who raped a girl and gets raped. Remember, this was a point at which Kurt Cobain was UNWILLINGLY writing songs, and so a lot of them weren't up to par. In turn, most of the lyrics were changed from original versions. Beyond this let me point out, Kurt Cobain was anti-commercialism, anti-fashion. He killed himself over this. So why do people get into these huge cult groups, worship his music, and butcher it in mudane little details? And Nevermind always has been and always will be considered the best nirvana album, no in utero. Almost every track on nevermind was released as a singlePOSTED: 12/04/2004 - 04:09 am / quote |

: hey asaragus, Kurt Cobain is widely regarded as the best songwriter of all time, and although he is not respected for his skills in guitar "per se" he was ranked 12th in the rolling stones 100 best guitarists of all time. Oh, and there weren't any other bands? *ahem* pearl jam, jane's addiction, alice in chains, trippin daisy, blur, so don't say there weren't any others. Pink Floyd has never been recognized for their instrumental skills, merely their skills with sound effects and 8 tracks. Led Zeppelin usually had some pretty simple riffs and maybe you didn't notice, but Nirvana is well known for their noteable influence from Led Zeppelin and the Beatles.POSTED: 12/04/2004 - 04:15 am / quote |

: Nevermind is regarded as their best album, not In Utero that isn't even up for discussion. Anyway, i personally own this album and i like it. Didn't really like how you just took it from Nirvana fanclub.com.
Also the people who are trying to show use how many other bands are better than Nirvana are gay. Pearl Jam and AIC are about equal talent wise. Pantera, Tool and APC, yeah in your ***ing dreams. Not one band in the world is over-rated. Most of the people who say they are over-rated don't like them. If you look at it, a band to go that big has to have alot of fans. So they are over-rated because they have alot of fans? So there is no over-rated bands, and just because you don't like them doesn't mean they are over-rated.POSTED: 12/05/2004 - 07:19 pm / quote |

: In Utero is hailed as the greatest Nirvana album, but do you really know whatthe songs mean?
Well those are my interpretations of the songs, pretty straight forward.POSTED: 12/07/2004 - 03:01 pm / quote |

Gallons Of Rubbing Alcohol Flow Through The Strip - This song is a poem to words. An improv-style song.
Well those are my interpretations of the songs, pretty straight forward.

: In Utero is hailed as the greatest Nirvana album, but do you really know whatthe songs mean?
